Mercyhurst at Wagner

NEW YORK (Interstat) — Brian Trobel rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns and added a 76-yard receiving score to lead Mercyhurst to a 19-7 victory over Wagner on Saturday at Wagner College Stadium.

The Lakers, who improved to 2-4 overall, used a dominant second quarter to seize control, outscoring the Seahawks 12-7 in the period. Wagner fell to 1-4.

After a scoreless first quarter defined by stalled drives and a missed 32-yard field goal by Wagner’s Nicholas Romero, Mercyhurst broke through early in the second. Trobel capped a methodical 11-play, 57-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt failed, leaving the Lakers with a 6-0 lead.

Wagner responded with its lone scoring drive of the game. Quarterback Jordan Barton engineered an 11-play, 85-yard march, finishing it with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Malik Cooper. Romero’s extra point gave the Seahawks a brief 7-6 advantage.

The lead was short-lived. On the first play of the ensuing Mercyhurst drive, quarterback Alex Gevaudan found Trobel on a short pass that the running back turned into a 76-yard touchdown. The Lakers’ two-point conversion attempt failed, but they took a 12-7 lead into halftime.

Mercyhurst extended its lead on its first possession of the third quarter. The drive was powered almost exclusively by Trobel, who carried the ball eight times for 56 yards, including a 22-yard burst and a 4-yard touchdown plunge. Max Young’s extra point gave the Lakers a 19-7 lead.

The Lakers’ defense sealed the win from there, stifling Wagner’s offense for the remainder of the game. The Seahawks’ final drive, led by backup quarterback Jack Stevens, reached the Mercyhurst 37-yard line in the final minutes, but a sack by Kyler Laing and Jonas King pushed them back, and four consecutive incomplete passes ended the threat.

Gevaudan finished the game 13 of 24 for 191 yards and a touchdown for Mercyhurst. Trobel was the workhorse, accounting for 195 all-purpose yards and all three Lakers touchdowns.

For Wagner, Barton completed 10 of 16 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown while adding 13 yards on the ground. Sekou Kamau was the Seahawks’ leading rusher with 47 yards on eight carries.

The loss overshadowed a strong defensive performance by Wagner, which held Mercyhurst well below its projected point total from the Interstat game simulator, which had forecast a 40-29 Lakers victory. Wagner had been installed as a 4.5-point pregame favorite, but the Lakers covered the spread with the outright win. The combined score of 26 points went under the over/under line of 44.5.

Mercyhurst looks to build on the win when it hosts Duquesne on Oct. 18. Wagner will try to rebound at home against Central Connecticut on the same date.
