Mercyhurst Defeats Wagner Behind Trobel’s Stellar Performance
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Interstat) — Brian Trobel amassed 195 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns, powering the Mercyhurst Lakers to a 19-7 victory over the Wagner Seahawks on a blustery Saturday at Wagner College Stadium.
The visiting Lakers, improving to 2-4, leaned heavily on their ground game, while the Seahawks’ offense sputtered, dropping their record to 1-4. The final score defied pregame expectations, as Wagner had been installed as a 4.5-point favorite, and the combined 26 points fell dramatically short of the over/under line of 44.5.
A defensive struggle for much of the first half, the game remained scoreless until the second quarter. Mercyhurst finally broke through after a methodical 18-play, 89-yard drive that spanned the first and second quarters. Trobel capped the marathon possession with a 3-yard touchdown run. The Lakers failed on the two-point conversion attempt, taking a 6-0 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the half.
Wagner responded with its lone bright spot of the day. Quarterback Jordan Barton, a La Verne, California native, engineered a 10-play, 85-yard drive, finishing it with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Malik Cooper of Philadelphia. Nicholas Romero’s extra point gave the Seahawks a brief 7-6 advantage.
That lead was short-lived. On the ensuing possession, Mercyhurst quarterback Alex Gevaudan connected with Trobel on a screen pass that turned into a 76-yard touchdown. The explosive play, which saw Trobel break into the open field and outrun the Wagner defense, swung the momentum permanently in the Lakers’ favor. Another failed two-point try left the score at 12-7, which held until halftime.
The Lakers sealed the victory with a dominant third-quarter drive that mirrored their first scoring march. They marched 54 yards on 10 plays, with Trobel again pounding it in from 4 yards out for his third touchdown of the day. Max Young’s extra point extended the Mercyhurst lead to 19-7.
From there, the Lakers’ defense took over. The unit consistently stifled Wagner’s rushing attack and generated consistent pressure, sacking Barton twice and his replacement, Jack Stevens of San Diego, twice more. Key sacks by Kyler Laing and Jonas King in the fourth quarter extinguished Wagner’s final hopes. A late fumble recovery by Adonis Marshall of Canton, Ohio, in the third quarter had also halted a promising Seahawks drive.
Trobel was the workhorse for Mercyhurst, rushing 28 times for 120 yards and two scores while adding 75 receiving yards and another touchdown on two catches. Gevaudan finished the game 13 of 24 for 191 yards and a touchdown.
For Wagner, Barton completed 10 of 16 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown but was hampered by several fumbles, one of which was lost. The Seahawks’ ground game was led by Sekou Kamau of Long Branch, New Jersey, who gained 47 yards on eight carries. Jeremiah Colclough of South Ozone Park, New York, was Barton’s most frequent target, hauling in four passes for 36 yards.
The loss dampens Wagner’s momentum following its first win of the season last week against Norfolk State. The Seahawks will look to regroup next Saturday when they host Central Connecticut. Mercyhurst, which has now won two of its last three games after a 1-3 start, returns home to face Duquesne.
The game’s outcome was a stark contrast to the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a high-scoring affair with Mercyhurst winning 40-29. The analytics system had also given the Lakers a 67.6 percent probability to win, a figure that proved accurate despite the point spread favoring the home team.
