Virginia Military Institute at East Tennessee State

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — East Tennessee State erupted for 31 unanswered points, turning a competitive first quarter into a decisive 45-10 rout of Virginia Military Institute in a non-conference football game Saturday at William B. Greene Jr. Stadium.

The Buccaneers improved to 2-4 on the season, while the Keydets fell to 1-4.

The game’s opening moments provided the day’s most dramatic swing. After forcing a quick VMI punt on the game’s first possession, East Tennessee State’s Xavier Gaillardetz fielded the kick at his own 20, found a seam and raced 80 yards for a touchdown, immediately erasing an early VMI lead and setting the tone for the afternoon.

East Tennessee State’s offense, which sputtered early, found its rhythm in the second quarter. Running back Devontae Houston capped a drive with a 10-yard touchdown run to give the Buccaneers a 14-10 lead they would not relinquish. Kicker Ewan Johnson added a 33-yard field goal, and quarterback Jake McNamara connected with Jeremiah Harrison on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 1:20 remaining in the half to send the Buccaneers into the break with a commanding 24-10 advantage.

The Buccaneers’ onslaught continued after halftime. McNamara, a Franklin, Tennessee native, orchestrated a quick scoring drive to open the third quarter, finding Ephraim Floyd on a 12-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 31-10. McNamara finished the day 8 of 14 for 176 yards and two touchdowns through the air.

VMI’s lone bright spot in the second half came just moments later when defensive back Robert Powell intercepted a McNamara pass and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown, briefly cutting the deficit to 31-17.

Any momentum from the defensive score was short-lived. East Tennessee State answered immediately with a methodical drive, powered by running back Jason Albritton, who carried the ball four times for 31 yards on the possession, including a 1-yard plunge for a touchdown to push the lead back to 38-17.

The Buccaneers’ ground game was dominant throughout, amassing 261 yards. Houston led the way with 76 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, while Khalil Eichelberger added 53 yards on 11 attempts. Albritton finished with 56 yards and a score.

VMI’s offensive struggles were profound. The Keydets cycled through three quarterbacks—Collin Shannon, Chandler Wilson and Nana Utsey—who combined for just 69 passing yards. The team managed only 47 total yards of offense and nine first downs. Ben Shrewsbury provided a small consolation for VMI with a 52-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

East Tennessee State capped the scoring with 58 seconds remaining as backup quarterback Jackson Byrd of Clayton, North Carolina, scrambled for a 20-yard touchdown.

The lopsided result defied the competitive nature of recent meetings between the two programs but aligned with pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had forecast a 31-19 Buccaneers victory and gave East Tennessee State a 94.3 percent probability to win.

Virginia Military Institute looks to rebound next Saturday when it hosts Samford. East Tennessee State travels to face Southern Conference rival Chattanooga, also next Saturday.
