East Tennessee State Routs Virginia Military Institute Behind Strong Ground Game
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — The East Tennessee State Buccaneers turned in a dominant performance on both sides of the ball, cruising to a 45-10 victory over the Virginia Military Institute Keydets in a nonconference football game Saturday at William B. Greene Jr. Stadium.
The Buccaneers, who improved to 2-4, overwhelmed the Keydets from the outset, amassing significant offensive yardage while their defense stifled VMI’s attack, holding the visitors to just 69 total yards of offense. The loss drops VMI to 1-4 on the season.
East Tennessee State set the tone early with a spectacular special teams play. After forcing a VMI punt on the game’s opening drive, Xavier Gaillardetz fielded the kick and raced 80 yards for a touchdown, electrifying the home crowd and giving the Buccaneers a 7-0 lead just over a minute and a half into the contest.
The Buccaneers’ offense, led by quarterback Jake McNamara, then took over. McNamara, a Franklin, Tennessee native, efficiently directed the attack, completing 8 of 14 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Jeremiah Harrison, who hauled in five catches for 71 yards and a score.
The second quarter saw the Bucs break the game open with 17 points. Running back Devontae Houston plunged in for a 10-yard touchdown run early in the period, extending the lead to 14-0. After a VMI drive stalled, the Buccaneers added a 33-yard field goal from Ewan Johnson. Just before halftime, McNamara connected with Harrison on a 17-yard touchdown strike, sending East Tennessee State into the locker room with a commanding 24-0 advantage.
Any hope of a VMI comeback was extinguished quickly in the third quarter. The Buccaneers marched down the field on their opening possession of the second half, capped by a 12-yard McNamara touchdown pass to Ephraim Floyd, pushing the lead to 31-0.
The Keydets managed to get on the board later in the third quarter when cornerback Robert Powell intercepted a McNamara pass and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown. The defensive score made it 31-7.
East Tennessee State responded immediately, however, with a powerful ground game. Running back Jason Albritton finished off the ensuing drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, restoring the 31-point lead at 38-7. Albritton led a potent Buccaneer rushing attack with 56 yards and a score on 10 carries. Khalil Eichelberger added 53 yards on 11 attempts, and Houston chipped in 76 yards on 12 carries.
The Keydets’ offense, which struggled throughout the day, managed a 52-yard field goal from Ben Shrewsbury in the fourth quarter for their final points. VMI cycled through three quarterbacks – Collin Shannon, Chandler Wilson, and Nana Utsey – who combined to complete just 11 of 30 passes for 69 yards. The ground game was equally ineffective, netting zero yards on 30 attempts.
East Tennessee State closed the scoring with under a minute to play as backup quarterback Jackson Byrd scrambled for a 20-yard touchdown to provide the final margin of 45-10.
The Buccaneers’ defense was relentless, recording multiple sacks and consistently pressuring VMI’s quarterbacks. Linebacker Ty Anderson also contributed an interception.
The game’s outcome was largely in line with pregame projections, though the Buccaneers’ margin of victory exceeded expectations. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of East Tennessee State 31, Virginia Military Institute 19, and its ELO system gave the Buccaneers a 94.30 percent probability to win.
Virginia Military Institute will look to rebound next Saturday when it returns home to face Samford. East Tennessee State continues its schedule on the road next Saturday against Chattanooga.
