Austin Peay at Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game defined by explosive special teams plays and a dominant fourth quarter, Eastern Kentucky overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Austin Peay 34-20 on Saturday at Roy Kidd Stadium.

The Colonels, who improved to 2-3, scored 17 unanswered points in the final quarter to seal the victory, while the Governors fell to 4-2.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair. Austin Peay struck first with a methodical 11-play, 79-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Chris Parson late in the first quarter.

The Governors’ lead was short-lived. On the ensuing kickoff, Eastern Kentucky’s T.J. Mitchell fielded the ball and raced 100 yards for a touchdown, tying the game just eight seconds after Austin Peay had scored.

Austin Peay responded by controlling the second quarter. They added a 24-yard field goal from Carson Smith and extended their lead when Parson connected with running back Courtland Simmons on a 15-yard touchdown pass, making the score 17-7.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the final minute of the half. Eastern Kentucky kicker Buzz Flabiano nailed a 43-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 17-10. On the next play from scrimmage, Austin Peay’s Parson was intercepted by defensive back Vito Tisdale, who returned the pick 19 yards for a touchdown, sending the teams into halftime tied at 17.

After a third quarter that saw only a 51-yard Flabiano field goal to give Eastern Kentucky a 20-17 lead, the Colonels put the game away in the final period.

Eastern Kentucky quarterback Myles Burkett, who finished 18 of 24 for 175 yards, engineered a 12-play, 68-yard drive that he finished himself with a 21-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 27-20.

Following an Austin Peay three-and-out, the Colonels delivered the knockout blow. On the first play of their next drive, running back Brady Hensley broke free for a 72-yard touchdown run, sealing the 34-20 victory. Hensley finished with 99 rushing yards on just eight carries.

Despite the loss, Austin Peay’s offense had productive days from several players. Quarterback Chris Parson from Brentwood, Tennessee, accounted for 359 total yards, throwing for 283 and a touchdown while rushing for 76 yards and another score. His primary target was Jaden Robinson, who hauled in eight receptions for 145 yards. Running back Isaiah Groves added 71 rushing yards on six attempts.

The game’s final score fell well under the pregame over/under line of 46.5. Eastern Kentucky, which had been a 7.5-point favorite, outperformed statistical projections that gave them a 61.5 percent chance to win.

Austin Peay will look to rebound on Oct. 25 when they host North Alabama. Eastern Kentucky travels to face North Alabama on Oct. 18.
