Eastern Kentucky Rallies Past Austin Peay for Home Victory
RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game defined by explosive plays and a stunning fourth-quarter collapse, the Eastern Kentucky Colonels rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat the Austin Peay Governors 34-20 on Saturday at Roy Kidd Stadium.
The Colonels, trailing 20-10 late in the second quarter, scored 24 unanswered points to seal the victory, improving their record to 2-3. The Governors, who had won four of their last five games, fell to 4-2.
The game turned on two pivotal plays just before halftime. After Austin Peay quarterback Chris Parson engineered a methodical drive culminating in a 15-yard touchdown pass to Courtland Simmons to extend the Governors’ lead to 20-10, the Colonels responded with a quick field goal from Buzz Flabiano to make it 20-17.
On the ensuing possession with under a minute to play, Parson’s pass was intercepted by Eastern Kentucky defensive back Vito Tisdale, who returned it 19 yards for a touchdown, swinging the momentum entirely and giving the Colonels a 24-20 halftime lead they would not relinquish.
Parson, a Brentwood, Tennessee native, was the engine for the Austin Peay offense, accounting for 359 total yards. He completed 22 of 37 passes for 283 yards and one touchdown while also rushing 21 times for 76 yards and another score. His primary target was Jaden Robinson, who hauled in eight catches for 145 yards.
Eastern Kentucky’s offense was led by quarterback Myles Burkett of Franklin, Wisconsin. Burkett was efficient, completing 18 of 24 passes for 175 yards and adding 41 yards on the ground, including a critical 21-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that extended his team’s lead.
The Colonels sealed the game with a back-breaking 72-yard touchdown run by Brady Hensley with just over two minutes remaining. Hensley, a local product from Richmond, Kentucky, finished with 99 rushing yards on just eight carries.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair. Austin Peay struck first with an 11-play, 89-yard drive capped by Parson’s 11-yard scramble for a touchdown. Eastern Kentucky answered immediately as T.J. Mitchell returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 7-7.
The Governors then added two Carson Smith field goals and the Simmons touchdown reception to build their 20-10 advantage before the late-half sequence changed the game.
After a defensive-minded third quarter that saw only a 51-yard Flabiano field goal to extend Eastern Kentucky’s lead to 27-20, the Colonels put the game away in the final period with Burkett’s scoring run and Hensley’s long dash.
Austin Peay’s ground game was bolstered by Isaiah Groves, who rushed for 71 yards on just six carries. Corey Richardson was a threat in the return game, amassing 130 yards on five kickoff returns.
The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which had projected a higher-scoring affair with Eastern Kentucky winning 42-29. The Colonels were installed as 7.5-point favorites, and the total score of 54 points went under the over/under line of 46.5. Eastern Kentucky’s ELO win probability was 61.5 percent.
Austin Peay will look to rebound on Oct. 25 when they host North Alabama. Eastern Kentucky travels to face North Alabama on Oct. 18.
