Toledo at Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (Interstat) — In a stunning fourth-quarter collapse, the Toledo Rockets squandered a 21-point lead and fell to the Bowling Green Falcons 28-23 on Saturday at Doyt L. Perry Stadium.
The Rockets, who led 21-0 in the second quarter and 21-7 entering the final period, were outscored 21-2 in the fourth quarter as the Falcons mounted an improbable comeback to win the rivalry matchup.
Toledo’s offense dominated early, scoring on its first two possessions. Running back Chip Trayanum, who finished with 125 yards on 27 carries, opened the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Tucker Gleason then added a 12-yard rushing touchdown later in the first quarter to give the Rockets a 14-0 lead.
The Rockets extended their advantage in the second quarter when Gleason connected with tight end Jacob Petersen on a 17-yard touchdown pass, capping a methodical 11-play, 57-yard drive. Gleason finished the game 19 of 30 for 264 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception.
Bowling Green’s offense, which had been stagnant for most of the first half, finally found a spark just before the break. With 13 seconds remaining, quarterback Lucian Anderson III hit running back Cameron Pettaway on a screen pass that turned into a 45-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 21-7 at halftime.
The Falcons pulled closer in the third quarter. Anderson engineered a 10-play, 51-yard drive, finishing it with an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jacob Harris, making the score 21-14.
The game completely unraveled for Toledo in a disastrous sequence midway through the fourth quarter. With 6:59 left, Bowling Green pulled even on a trick play. Wide receiver RJ Garcia II took a backward pass and launched a 73-yard touchdown strike to a wide-open Pettaway, tying the game at 21.
On the ensuing Toledo possession, the Rockets’ fortunes worsened. Gleason was sacked by Bowling Green’s Myles Bradley in his own end zone, fumbling the ball. The Rockets recovered the fumble, but the play resulted in a safety, giving Bowling Green a 23-21 lead.
The Falcons capitalized on the free kick immediately. Taking over with strong field position, they needed just one play for running back Chris McMillian to plunge in from 1 yard out, stretching their lead to 28-21 with 6:02 remaining.
Toledo’s final drive to potentially tie or win the game ended when Gleason’s pass was intercepted by Bowling Green defensive back MJ Cannon with just over a minute left. The Falcons then took an intentional safety on the game’s final play by running out of their own end zone to account for the final margin.
The Bowling Green defense, led by linebacker Gideon Lampron’s 13 tackles and a secondary that recorded seven pass breakups and an interception, stiffened significantly after halftime, holding the potent Rockets offense to just two points in the second half.
The victory improves Bowling Green’s record to 2-3 on the season, while Toledo falls to 3-2. The Falcons will host Central Michigan next Saturday, while the Rockets return home to face Kent State.
