Bowling Green Rallies to Stun Toledo in Fourth-Quarter Comeback
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of momentum, the Bowling Green Falcons erased a 21-point halftime deficit with a dominant second-half performance to defeat the Toledo Rockets 28 to 23 in a Mid-American Conference thriller on Saturday at Doyt L. Perry Stadium.
The Falcons, who were held scoreless in the first half, erupted for 28 points after the break, including 14 in a decisive fourth quarter, to secure a comeback victory that defied their sluggish start and handed their archrivals a devastating defeat.
Toledo, the preseason MAC favorite, looked every bit the part in the first half, racing out to a commanding lead. The Rockets’ offense operated with ruthless efficiency on their opening drive, capped by a 14-yard touchdown run from workhorse running back Chip Trayanum. The Akron, Ohio, native was a force all afternoon, rushing for 125 yards on 27 carries.
The Rockets’ defense stifled Bowling Green’s attack, forcing a series of punts. Toledo quarterback Tucker Gleason then extended the lead, scrambling for a 12-yard touchdown to put the Rockets up 14 to 0 before the first quarter had even concluded.
The onslaught continued in the second quarter. Gleason, who finished 19 of 30 for 264 yards through the air, connected with tight end Jacob Petersen on a 17-yard scoring strike, pushing the Toledo advantage to 21 to 0.
Bowling Green’s offense finally showed a pulse in the final minute of the half. Facing a seemingly insurmountable deficit, quarterback Lucian Anderson III found a spark, hitting running back Cameron Pettaway on a screen pass that turned into a 45-yard touchdown with just 13 seconds remaining, sending the Falcons into the locker room with a flicker of hope.
That flicker became a flame in the third quarter. After a defensive stand, the Falcons engineered a methodical 76-yard drive, culminating in an 8-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to tight end Jacob Harris, cutting the Toledo lead to 21 to 14.
The game completely turned in a chaotic fourth quarter. After Toledo’s Braden Awls intercepted an Anderson pass in the end zone, the Rockets seemed poised to salt the game away. Instead, the ensuing possession ended in disaster. Gleason was sacked by Bowling Green’s Myles Bradley and fumbled. The Falcons’ Isaiah Thomison fell on the loose ball at the Toledo 1-yard line. On the next play, Chris McMillian punched it in to tie the game at 21.
Just two plays later, the Falcons pulled off a breathtaking trick play. Wide receiver RJ Garcia II took a backward pass and launched a 73-yard touchdown strike to a wide-open Pettaway, giving Bowling Green its first lead of the day at 28 to 21 with 6:59 remaining. Pettaway was the breakout star for the Falcons, amassing 118 receiving yards and two touchdowns on just two catches, in addition to 50 return yards.
Toledo had two final chances to tie or win the game. The first drive stalled, but the Rockets got the ball back with just over two minutes left. Gleason drove Toledo to the Bowling Green 32, but his fourth-down pass was intercepted by Falcons defensive back MJ Cannon with just over a minute left, seemingly sealing the victory.
Bowling Green, however, gave Toledo one last, bizarre chance. Taking over with the intent to run out the clock, the Falcons were flagged for multiple delay of game penalties while trying to kill the final seconds. With six seconds left, Anderson took the final snap and retreated into his own end zone, intentionally taking a safety as time expired to make the final score 28 to 23.
The Falcons’ defense, led by a massive 13-tackle performance from linebacker Gideon Lampron and a critical interception from Cannon, was the story of the second half, completely shutting down a Toledo offense that had been prolific early.
The victory improves Bowling Green’s record to 2 wins and 3 losses on the season, while Toledo falls to 3 wins and 2 losses. The Falcons will host Central Michigan next Saturday, while the Rockets return home to face Kent State.
The comeback fulfilled the projection of Interstat’s game simulator, which had predicted a 31-28 Bowling Green victory. The Falcons were also pregame favorites, installed with a -10.5 point spread. The total score of 51 points went over the betting over/under line of 47.5.
