Roadrunners Rout Owls Behind McCown’s 3 Touchdowns

SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — The Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners unleashed a dominant performance Saturday at the Alamodome, overwhelming the Rice Owls 61-13 in a game that was effectively decided by halftime.

Quarterback Owen McCown was surgical in directing the Roadrunners’ offense, completing 15 of 21 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns before exiting the blowout. His efficiency set the tone for a UTSA team that improved its season record to 2-3, while Rice fell to an even 3-3.

The game began with a deceptive hint of competitiveness as Rice took an early lead. The Owls capitalized on their opening drive, moving the ball effectively before stalling and settling for a 36-yard field goal from Enock Gota.

Any momentum for the visitors was short-lived. UTSA responded with a relentless offensive onslaught, scoring 21 unanswered points in the first quarter. The Roadrunners’ first touchdown came on a 1-yard plunge by Robert Henry Jr., capping a quick drive that featured a 57-yard connection from McCown to AJ Wilson.

After forcing a Rice punt, UTSA marched down the field again, with McCown finding Devin McCuin for a 2-yard touchdown pass. The first-quarter barrage concluded with another McCown-to-Wilson strike, this time for 20 yards, to put the Roadrunners firmly in control.

The second quarter saw no respite for the Owls. UTSA extended its lead when McCown hit DJ Allen Jr. for a 43-yard touchdown. The Roadrunners’ special teams then set up another score, as a 40-yard punt return by Elliott Brow gave UTSA prime field position. The drive ultimately ended with a 45-yard field goal from Michael Petro, making the score 31-3.

Just before halftime, UTSA running back Will Henderson III broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown run, seemingly putting an exclamation point on the half. Rice, however, managed a brief spark just before the break. Running back Daelen Alexander ripped off a 57-yard run to the UTSA 3-yard line, and he punched it in from there to give the Owls their first touchdown and send the teams to the locker rooms with the score 38-10.

Any hope of a Rice comeback was extinguished immediately in the third quarter. On the Owls’ first offensive play, a pass from Patrick Crayton Jr. was intercepted by UTSA linebacker Kendrick Blackshire, who returned it 17 yards for a touchdown.

The defensive and special teams dominance continued for the Roadrunners. Later in the third quarter, UTSa’s Jon Jones tackled a Rice ball carrier in the end zone for a safety. On the ensuing free kick, Henderson III took a handoff and raced 57 yards for his second touchdown of the day, pushing the lead to 61-10.

Rice added a final, inconsequential score in the fourth quarter with a 45-yard field goal from Chase Allen to bring the final tally to 61-13.

The Roadrunners’ defense was suffocating throughout, forcing multiple turnovers and consistently harassing a carousel of Rice quarterbacks. The Owls utilized four different passers—Chase Jenkins, Drew Devillier, Patrick Crayton Jr., and Lucas Scheerhorn—who combined for a paltry 76 yards through the air. The UTSA defensive effort was a collective one, with 10 different players recording at least three tackles, led by Elijah Newell with seven and Shad Banks Jr. and James Walley Jr. with six and five, respectively.

The lopsided result defied the pregame projections, which had Texas-San Antonio as a 9.5-point favorite with an over/under of 48.5. The Roadrunners easily covered the spread, and the combined score of 74 sailed over the line. The victory also significantly exceeded the Interstat game simulator’s projection of a 41-25 UTSA win.

Rice will look to regroup during its upcoming bye week before hosting Connecticut on Oct. 25. Texas-San Antonio, meanwhile, will travel to face North Texas on Oct. 18, seeking to build on this decisive victory.
