Charlotte at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Interstat) — Cale Hellums rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Army Black Knights to a decisive 24-7 victory over the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday at Michie Stadium.

Army improved its record to 2-3, while Charlotte dropped to 1-4.

The Black Knights’ trademark triple-option offense was in peak form, amassing 354 yards on the ground and controlling the clock. Hellums, a quarterback from Tomball, Texas, was the catalyst, averaging 6.8 yards per carry. His 50-yard scamper in the first quarter set up his own 1-yard touchdown plunge to tie the game at 7.

Charlotte’s only points came on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Grayson Loftis to KD Hunter-Gibson with just eight seconds remaining in the game, preventing a shutout. The 49ers’ offense struggled to sustain drives for most of the contest, managing only 162 total yards.

After Hellums’ first score, Army took the lead for good in the second quarter. A methodical, clock-chewing drive was capped by a 5-yard touchdown run from Carson Smith, giving the Black Knights a 14-7 advantage. Just before halftime, Army extended its lead when Dawson Jones connected on a 38-yard field goal as time expired in the half, making the score 17-7.

The Black Knights put the game out of reach on their opening drive of the third quarter. Hellums orchestrated another long march, finishing it with his second 1-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 24-7.

Charlotte’s offense, led initially by Zach Wilcke and later by Loftis, could not find an answer for Army’s relentless defensive pressure. The 49ers were forced to punt on eight of their first nine possessions. Defensively, Charlotte was led by linebacker Reid Williford, who recorded a game-high 17 tackles.

Army’s defense was stifling, with linebacker Kalib Fortner notching seven tackles and Eric Ford adding a sack. The unit consistently put Charlotte in unfavorable down-and-distance situations, leading to nine punts.

The final score defied pregame projections, as the total of 31 points fell well under the over/under line of 45.5. Army, which had been installed as an 18.5-point favorite, covered the spread with the 17-point victory.

Charlotte will look to rebound next Saturday when it hosts Temple. Army travels to New Orleans to face Tulane next Saturday.
