Army Rushes Past Charlotte for Home Victory

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a methodical and dominant display of its signature ground attack, the Army Black Knights controlled the clock and the line of scrimmage to defeat the Charlotte 49ers 24-7 on Saturday at a rain-soaked Michie Stadium.

The Black Knights, improving to 2-3, amassed 335 rushing yards, led by a spectacular performance from quarterback Cale Hellums, while their defense stifled the 49ers for three quarters before a late Charlotte touchdown broke the shutout. The loss drops Charlotte to 1-4 on the season.

Hellums, a junior from Tomball, Texas, was the engine of the Army offense, carrying the ball 21 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns. His 50-yard scamper in the first quarter set up his own 1-yard plunge to tie the game at 7-7, answering an early Charlotte score that was already on the board from the opening kickoff due to a pre-game administrative decision by the officiating crew.

The game began under unusual circumstances. Following a pre-game penalty assessed to Charlotte, the contest started with the 49ers already leading 7-0 and in possession of the ball at their own 22-yard line. Despite the head start, the Charlotte offense, led initially by quarterback Zach Wilcke, could not sustain momentum against a relentless Army defensive front.

After the teams traded punts, Army embarked on a 15-play, 80-yard drive that consumed over eight minutes of the first quarter, culminating in Hellums’ first touchdown. That drive set the tone for the afternoon, as the Black Knights consistently strung together long, time-consuming possessions.

Army took the lead for good in the second quarter, capitalizing on another long drive. This one covered 86 yards on 13 plays, with running back Carson Smith of Middletown, Maryland, pounding it in from 5 yards out to give the Black Knights a 14-7 advantage.

The Charlotte offense, which rotated between Wilcke and Grayson Loftis at quarterback, struggled to find any rhythm. Wilcke finished 8 of 14 for 42 yards and was sacked once. The 49ers’ running game, outside of a few scattered gains, was consistently met by a swarm of Army defenders.

Just before the half, Hellums engineered a crisp two-minute drill, moving the Black Knights 57 yards in nine plays to set up a 38-yard field goal by Dawson Jones as time expired, sending Army into the locker room with a 17-7 lead.

The third quarter was more of the same, with Army’s defense pinning Charlotte deep in its own territory. A poor punt by the 49ers gave the Black Knights excellent field position at the Charlotte 46. A few plays later, Hellums connected with Noah Short on a 44-yard pass play, the longest of the game for either team, down to the 9-yard line. Hellums finished the drive with his second 1-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 24-7.

Charlotte’s offense finally showed signs of life in the fourth quarter with Loftis, from Gaffney, South Carolina, at the helm. Loftis led a frantic, 75-yard touchdown drive in the final minute, completing a 16-yard pass to KD Hunter-Gibson for the score as time expired. Loftis finished 8 of 12 for 68 yards and added 14 rushing yards.

The 49ers’ defense was led by a massive effort from linebacker Reid Williford of Franklin, Tennessee, who recorded 17 tackles. Linebacker Gavin Willis added 10 stops for Charlotte.

For Army, the defensive effort was a collective success. Linebacker Kalib Fortner of Knoxville, Tennessee, led the team with seven tackles, while linebacker Eric Ford of Laurel, Maryland, recorded a sack among his four tackles. The Black Knights consistently pressured the Charlotte quarterbacks and stuffed the run, holding the 49ers to just 110 total yards until their final, inconsequential drive.

The final score of 31 total points fell well under the over/under line of 45.5, a direct result of Army’s ball-control offense and Charlotte’s inability to sustain drives for most of the contest. The result defied the pre-game spread, which had Charlotte as an 18.5-point underdog, as Army’s victory was more decisive than many anticipated, though the late touchdown brought the margin closer.

Army looks to build on this victory when it travels to face Tulane next Saturday. Charlotte returns home to host Temple, also on Saturday, seeking to end its three-game losing streak.
