Ohio State at Illinois
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Interstat) — In a matchup of unbeaten Big Ten contenders, the Ohio State Buckeyes methodically dispatched the Illinois Fighting Illini 34 to 16 on Saturday before a crowd of 60,670 at Memorial Stadium.
The victory extended Ohio State’s record to 5-0, while handing Illinois its first loss of the season, dropping the Fighting Illini to 5-1.
Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin, a freshman from Carlsbad, California, efficiently managed the game, completing 19 of 27 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a rushing score. The Buckeyes’ ground game was led by a committee, with Bo Jackson rushing for 47 yards and a touchdown and CJ Donaldson adding 44 yards and two touchdowns.
The Buckeyes set the tone early, controlling the clock and capitalizing on their opportunities. They opened the scoring with a 26-yard field goal from Jayden Fielding on their first drive. Later in the first quarter, Donaldson capped a short-field drive following an Illinois turnover with a 1-yard plunge to give Ohio State a 10 to 0 lead.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern. Fielding connected on a 31-yard field goal, and Sayin later found Jackson on a 17-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 20 to 0. Illinois finally got on the board just before halftime, with David Olano converting a 24-yard field goal to make the score 20 to 3 at the break.
Illinois showed signs of life to start the second half, engineering a 75-yard drive that running back Aidan Laughery finished with a 1-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 20 to 10. Laughery, from Gibson City, Illinois, was a bright spot for the Illini, rushing for 50 yards and catching four passes for 12 yards and the score.
Ohio State responded immediately, however, with a 13-play, 63-yard drive of its own. Donaldson powered in from 2 yards out for his second touchdown of the day, restoring the Buckeyes’ three-score advantage at 27 to 10.
The Buckeyes put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter when Sayin connected with Jeremiah Smith on a 2-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 34 to 10. Illinois added a late touchdown on a 4-yard pass from Luke Altmyer to Collin Dixon, but the ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed, setting the final score.
Altmyer, Illinois’ quarterback from Starkville, Mississippi, finished 30 of 44 for 248 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His top target was Cole Rusk, who caught five passes for 68 yards. Defensively, the Fighting Illini were led by Matthew Bailey, who recorded eight tackles.
Ohio State’s defense was anchored by strong performances from Sonny Styles and Arvell Reese, who each had 10 tackles. Reese also notched 1.5 sacks.
The game’s final score of 50 points went over the betting over/under line of 51.5. Illinois had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -15.5, a mark Ohio State easily covered with the 18-point victory.
Ohio State travels to face Wisconsin next Saturday. Illinois has a bye week before heading to Washington on Oct. 25.
