Ohio State stays unbeaten, tops Illinois
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Interstat) — In a clash of unbeaten Big Ten contenders, Ohio State methodically dispatched Illinois, handing the Fighting Illini their first loss of the season with a 34-16 victory before a crowd of 60,670 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
The Buckeyes, improving to 5-0, used a dominant first half and a punishing ground game to control the clock and the scoreboard, while their defense consistently pressured Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer and stifled the Illini offense until late in the contest.
Ohio State set the tone from the opening drive, marching 69 yards in 13 plays. The possession stalled at the Illinois 8-yard line, but kicker Jayden Fielding connected on a 26-yard field goal to put the Buckeyes on the board first.
The Buckeye defense quickly gave the ball back to the offense, as linebacker Payton Pierce intercepted an Altmyer pass on Illinois’ ensuing drive, returning it to the Illini 35. Six plays later, tight end CJ Donaldson powered in from a yard out for the game’s first touchdown, capping a short-field drive for a 10-0 lead.
Ohio State’s offense continued its efficient execution in the second quarter. Fielding added a second field goal, this time from 31 yards, to extend the lead to 13-0. The Buckeyes then capitalized on a critical turnover when Illinois running back Ca’Lil Valentine fumbled, with Ohio State’s Kayden McDonald recovering. The miscue led to a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Julian Sayin to running back Bo Jackson, pushing the advantage to 20-0.
Illinois, which fell to 5-1, finally got on the board just before halftime. A 14-play, 74-yard drive, fueled by the passing of Altmyer, reached the Ohio State 1-yard line. The Buckeye defense held firm, forcing the Illini to settle for a 24-yard field goal from David Olano with just over a minute remaining in the half, making the score 20-3 at the break.
The Fighting Illini emerged from halftime with renewed energy, engineering a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Running back Aidan Laughery, who finished with 50 rushing yards, capped the march with a 1-yard plunge, cutting the deficit to 20-10.
Ohio State responded emphatically, embarking on a marathon 15-play, 63-yard drive that consumed over eight minutes of the third quarter. Donaldson again finished the drive, plunging in from two yards out for his second touchdown of the day, restoring a three-score lead at 27-10.
The Buckeyes put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter. Sayin found star receiver Jeremiah Smith for a 2-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 34-10 and effectively sealing the outcome.
Illinois added a late consolation score with 4:25 remaining, as Altmyer connected with Collin Dixon on a 4-yard touchdown pass. A failed two-point conversion attempt left the score at 34-16.
Sayin, the Buckeyes’ quarterback, was efficient, completing 19 of 27 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 3 yards on the ground. The Ohio State rushing attack was a committee effort, led by Jackson’s 47 yards and a touchdown, and Donaldson’s 44 yards and two scores. Smith was the leading receiver with 5 catches for 42 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively for Ohio State, safety Sonny Styles and linebacker Arvell Reese were everywhere, each recording 10 tackles. Reese also notched 1.5 sacks, while defensive end Caden Curry added another sack.
For Illinois, Altmyer completed 30 of 44 passes for 248 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked three times. His top targets were Hank Beatty, who caught 7 passes for 48 yards, and tight end Cole Rusk, who had 5 receptions for a game-high 68 yards. Laughery was the most productive member of a rushing attack that was largely contained by the Buckeyes’ front seven.
Defensively, Illinois was led by defensive back Matthew Bailey, who registered 8 tackles, and defensive end James Thompson Jr., who had 7.
The victory keeps Ohio State perfect on the season as they head into a pivotal road test at Wisconsin next Saturday. Illinois will look to rebound on the road at Washington on October 25.
