Washington State at Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. (Interstat) — In a game where they were given less than a two percent chance to win, the Washington State Cougars pushed the undefeated Ole Miss Rebels to the brink before falling 24-21 on Saturday at a sold-out Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

A crowd of 66,392 watched as the Cougars, 31.5-point underdogs, took a shocking lead and held it deep into the fourth quarter before the Rebels, ranked among the nation’s elite, mounted a final, decisive drive to remain perfect on the season.

Washington State struck first, capping an 11-play, 75-yard opening drive with a 26-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zevi Eckhaus to Landon Wright. The Cougar defense then stifled two promising Ole Miss drives, forcing a missed 47-yard field goal from Lucas Carneiro and an interception by safety Tucker Large to maintain a 7-0 lead after the first quarter.

The Rebels, visibly frustrated, finally got on the board in the second quarter. After a fumble recovery gave them a short field, their drive stalled, leading to a 40-yard Carneiro field goal. Just before halftime, Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss engineered an 87-yard scoring drive in just over two minutes, finding tight end Dae’Quan Wright for a 2-yard touchdown pass to take a 10-7 lead into the break.

The Cougars responded immediately in the third quarter. On their second offensive play, running back Kirby Vorhees broke free for a stunning 46-yard touchdown run, vaulting Washington State back into the lead at 14-10.

The two teams traded blows throughout the physical third quarter. Ole Miss reclaimed the lead late in the period when Chambliss scrambled for a 17-yard touchdown, making it 17-14. The Rebels then extended their lead early in the fourth quarter on a perfectly executed 35-yard touchdown strike from Chambliss to Cayden Lee, pushing the advantage to 24-14.

Refusing to capitulate, Eckhaus led the Cougars on a gritty 75-yard drive, culminating in a 19-yard touchdown pass to Tony Freeman with 2:43 remaining, pulling Washington State back within three points.

The Cougars’ defense needed one final stop but could not get it. Chambliss connected with Wright on a crucial 42-yard completion on the ensuing drive, allowing Ole Miss to run precious time off the clock and force Washington State to burn its timeouts. The Rebels’ punt pinned the Cougars at their own 10-yard line with just over a minute left, and the Ole Miss defense sealed the victory with a sack from Will Echoles as time expired.

Chambliss finished an efficient 20 of 29 for 253 yards and two touchdowns, adding another score on the ground. His primary weapon was running back Kewan Lacy, who gashed the Cougar defense for 142 yards on 24 carries. Wright led all receivers with 80 yards and a touchdown on four catches.

For Washington State, Eckhaus was sharp, completing 24 of 31 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Vorhees was the workhorse in the backfield, rushing for 88 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries. Freeman was Eckhaus’s favorite target, hauling in nine passes for 90 yards and the late score.

Defensively, the Rebels were led by a relentless pass rush, with Kam Franklin recording 1.5 sacks and Princewill Umanmielen adding a sack and two quarterback hurries. Linebacker Parker McKenna was everywhere for the Cougars, registering a game-high 12 tackles in the losing effort.

The loss drops Washington State to 3-2 on the season, while Ole Miss improves to 5-0 and heads into a pivotal SEC road game at Georgia next Saturday.
