Ole Miss Edges Washington State to Remain Undefeated

OXFORD, Miss. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant ground attack and a late defensive stand, the undefeated Ole Miss Rebels survived a fierce challenge from the Washington State Cougars, securing a 24-21 victory on Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 66,392 at a raucous Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

The fifth-ranked Rebels, now 5-0, leaned heavily on running back Kewan Lacy and a swarming defense to overcome a gritty performance from the visiting Cougars, who fell to 3-2.

Lacy was the workhorse for the Ole Miss offense, carrying the ball 24 times for 142 bruising yards, consistently moving the chains and controlling the clock. His efforts were complemented by quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who efficiently managed the game, completing 20 of 29 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score on the ground.

Washington State, a 31.5-point underdog according to pregame odds, defied expectations from the opening drive. The Cougars struck first, capping an impressive initial possession with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Zevi Eckhaus to Landon Wright. The score capped a 92-yard drive that immediately silenced the home crowd and signaled that an upset was a genuine possibility.

The Rebels’ offense, however, struggled to find its rhythm early. A promising 11-play drive in the first quarter stalled at the Washington State 4-yard line, and a missed 47-yard field goal attempt by Lucas Carneiro left Ole Miss scoreless. The Rebels finally broke through in the second quarter with a 40-yard Carneiro field goal, cutting the deficit to 7-3.

Just before halftime, Ole Miss engineered a critical 12-play, 75-yard drive. Chambliss methodically moved the offense down the field, culminating in a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dae’Quan Wright with 31 seconds remaining. The score gave the Rebels their first lead at 10-7 heading into the break, a significant momentum shift after a disjointed first half.

Washington State responded immediately after the intermission. On their first possession of the third quarter, running back Kirby Vorhees broke free for a spectacular 46-yard touchdown run, vaulting the Cougars back into the lead at 14-10. Vorhees finished with 88 yards on just 10 carries.

The back-and-forth affair continued as Ole Miss answered with a touchdown of its own. Chambliss capped a 10-play, 82-yard drive with a 17-yard scramble for a touchdown, putting the Rebels back on top 17-14 late in the third quarter.

The decisive blow came midway through the fourth quarter. Facing a third-and-10, Chambliss connected with Cayden Lee on a deep 35-yard touchdown strike, extending the Ole Miss lead to 24-14 with 6:51 remaining.

Refusing to capitulate, Washington State mounted a determined 75-yard scoring drive. Eckhaus, who finished 24 of 31 for 218 yards and two touchdowns, found his favorite target, Tony Freeman, for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 2:43 left on the clock. Freeman was exceptional for the Cougars, hauling in nine receptions for 90 yards and the late score, pulling his team within a field goal at 24-21.

The Cougars’ defense forced a crucial punt, giving Eckhaus and the offense one final chance with just over a minute to play, starting from their own 10-yard line. The Ole Miss defense, which had harassed Eckhaus all afternoon, rose to the occasion. On a critical third down, defensive end Will Echoles sacked Eckhaus for a 10-yard loss, pushing Washington State back to its own 6-yard line.

The Cougars converted a desperate fourth-and-24 to keep the drive alive, but with time for one last play from the Ole Miss 38-yard line, Eckhaus’s Hail Mary attempt fell incomplete in the end zone as time expired, sealing the Rebels’ hard-fought victory.

Defensively, the Rebels were led by a committee of tacklers, with linebackers Wydett Williams Jr., Tahj Chambers, and TJ Dottery, along with defensive end Kam Franklin, each recording six tackles. Franklin also added 1.5 sacks. For Washington State, linebacker Parker McKenna was everywhere, posting a game-high 12 tackles, while Sullivan Schlimgen added nine. Defensive lineman Isaac Terrell was a disruptive force in the backfield, registering two sacks for the Cougars.

The win sets up a colossal SEC showdown next week as Ole Miss travels to face the Georgia Bulldogs. Washington State, despite the loss, returns to action with a road game against Virginia.
