Jackson State at Alabama A&M
MOBILE, Ala. (Interstat) — JaCobian Morgan accounted for five touchdowns and Travis Terrell Jr. amassed 230 all-purpose yards as the Jackson State Tigers delivered a stunning offensive showcase, routing the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 57-24 on Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
The Tigers, now 3-1, exploded for 23 points in the second quarter to turn a close game into a rout, far surpassing the pregame expectations. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Jackson State 38, Alabama A&M 31, and the Bulldogs had been installed as a 14.5-point favorite. The combined score of 81 points easily cleared the over/under line of 55.5.
Morgan, a 6-foot-4, 229-pound quarterback from Canton, Mississippi, was nearly flawless. He completed 21 of 30 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns while adding 120 rushing yards and another score on 12 carries. His dual-threat ability overwhelmed the Bulldogs’ defense from the opening drive.
Jackson State set the tone early, marching down the field on its first possession and capping the drive with a 25-yard field goal from Gerardo Baeza. The Tigers’ defense then made a critical play, as Tymon Wells recovered a fumble by Alabama A&M quarterback Cornelious Brown IV deep in Bulldogs territory. Two plays later, Morgan connected with Shemar Savage for a 22-yard touchdown strike, giving Jackson State a 10-0 lead.
Alabama A&M, which fell to 3-2, responded with a 10-play, 85-yard drive. Brown capped it with a 10-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 10-7 late in the first quarter. That, however, was as close as the Bulldogs would get.
The second quarter belonged entirely to Jackson State. Morgan scored on a 4-yard run, then found Savage again, this time for a 60-yard touchdown bomb that stretched the lead to 27-7. After an Alabama A&M field goal, Morgan engineered a quick 80-yard drive, hitting Ja’Naylon Dupree for a 19-yard touchdown with 1:55 remaining in the half. A 27-yard field goal from Donovan Warren as time expired sent the Tigers into halftime with a commanding 33-10 advantage.
Jackson State picked up right where it left off in the third quarter, with Emari Matthews plunging in from 1 yard out to extend the lead to 40-10.
Alabama A&M’s Brown, a 6-foot-5 quarterback from Birmingham, Alabama, tried to mount a comeback. He threw two third-quarter touchdown passes—a 36-yarder to Franck Pierre and a 41-yard connection with Daveon Walker—to make the score 43-24. Brown finished 26 of 39 for 341 yards and two touchdowns, but it was not enough to keep pace with the Tigers’ onslaught.
Jackson State put the game away in the fourth quarter. Morgan threw his fourth and final touchdown pass, a 37-yard strike to Dupree. Donerio Davenport then sealed the victory with a 1-yard touchdown run midway through the period.
While Morgan was the star, he had plenty of support. Terrell, a running back from Atlanta, was a dynamic weapon, rushing for 103 yards on just seven carries, including a 71-yard burst in the fourth quarter. He also added 148 kick return yards. Savage finished with three receptions for 91 yards and two scores, while Dupree had three catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns.
For Alabama A&M, Walker was a bright spot with nine receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Nwokenkwo added 74 receiving yards on two catches.
Jackson State will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Alabama State on Oct. 11. Alabama A&M will try to rebound at home against Mississippi Valley State on the same date.
