Jackson State Routs Alabama A&M in High-Scoring Affair
MOBILE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a stunning offensive showcase that defied pregame projections, the Jackson State Tigers dismantled the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 57 to 24 on Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, led by a historic dual-threat performance from quarterback JaCobian Morgan.
The game, which saw a combined 81 points, sailed far over the expected defensive struggle, with the Tigers’ offense operating at a relentless pace from the opening drive. The victory improved Jackson State’s record to 3-1, while Alabama A&M fell to 3-2.
Morgan, a junior from Canton, Mississippi, was the catalyst for the Tigers’ onslaught. He was nearly flawless through the air, completing 21 of 30 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns. On the ground, he was equally devastating, rushing for 120 yards on 12 carries and adding another touchdown. His performance was the cornerstone of an offense that amassed over 600 total yards.
The tone was set early. After forcing a quick punt from the Bulldogs, Jackson State marched down the field, culminating the drive with a 25-yard field goal from Gerardo Baeza. The Tigers’ defense then made a critical play on Alabama A&M’s next possession, as defensive lineman Tymon Wells of Hollandale, Mississippi, stripped Bulldogs quarterback Cornelious Brown IV, recovering the fumble to give Jackson State prime field position.
While the Tigers had to settle for another field goal attempt, which missed, their offense soon found a rhythm that Alabama A&M could not disrupt. Morgan connected with Shemar Savage for a 22-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter to extend the lead to 10-0.
Alabama A&M responded with its most impressive drive of the half. Brown, a Birmingham, Alabama native, engineered a methodical series, capping it with a 10-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 10-7.
Any momentum the Bulldogs gained was swiftly erased. Jackson State running back Donerio Davenport broke loose for a 34-yard run on the ensuing drive, setting up a 4-yard touchdown scramble by Morgan. Minutes later, Morgan found Savage again, this time for a 60-yard touchdown strike, pushing the lead to 23-7.
After Alabama A&M kicker David Faulk of Madison, Alabama, connected on a 46-yard field goal, the Tigers’ offense continued its first-half explosion. Morgan led a rapid two-minute drill, finishing it with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Ja’Naylon Dupree. Just before halftime, Jackson State kicker Donovan Warren of Santa Cruz, California, nailed a 27-yard field goal to send the Tigers into the break with a commanding 33-10 advantage.
The third quarter saw a brief resurgence from the Bulldogs. Brown, who finished 26 of 39 for 341 yards and two touchdowns, found Franck Pierre for a 36-yard touchdown. Later in the quarter, he hit Daveon Walker of Warner Robins, Georgia, on a 41-yard scoring pass, bringing the score to 33-24 and injecting a measure of hope into the home crowd.
That hope was short-lived. Jackson State answered immediately, as Morgan engineered another scoring drive, culminating in his fourth touchdown pass of the day, a 37-yard connection with Dupree early in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 43-24.
The Tigers put the game completely out of reach on their next possession. A 71-yard run by all-purpose standout Travis Terrell Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia, set up a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Davenport to make it 50-24. The Jackson State defense, which had bent for 341 passing yards, stiffened in the final period, preventing any further comeback attempt.
Terrell was a dynamic force for the Tigers, contributing 103 rushing yards on just seven carries and adding 148 return yards. Savage was Morgan’s primary deep threat, hauling in three passes for 91 yards and two scores. For Alabama A&M, Walker was a consistent target with nine receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown.
The lopsided result was a surprise considering the pregame metrics. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a much closer final score of Jackson State 38, Alabama A&M 31, and the Bulldogs had been installed as a 14.5-point favorite. The total score of 81 easily surpassed the over/under line of 55.5.
Jackson State will look to continue its winning ways next Saturday when it hosts Alabama State. Alabama A&M will aim to rebound at home against Mississippi Valley State.
