Norfolk State at Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth Battle of the Bay, Braden Davis scored on a 21-yard run with 8:45 remaining to lift the Hampton Pirates to a 41-34 victory over the Norfolk State Spartans on Saturday at Armstrong Stadium.

The game, a non-conference affair between the two longtime rivals, saw both teams erase double-digit deficits and featured a combined 965 yards of total offense.

Norfolk State (1-4) exploded out of the gate, taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Spartans quarterback Otto Kuhns connected with DreSean Kendrick on a 65-yard touchdown pass on their first offensive drive. Kuhns then found Jaylen Laudermilk for a 9-yard score to build the early advantage.

Hampton (1-4) responded with 27 unanswered points spanning the first and second quarters. After a 39-yard field goal from Brett Starling, the Pirates’ offense found its rhythm. Davis hit Donovan Shepard for a 7-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter. Gracen Goldsmith then broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and after a Starling field goal, MarShawn Ferguson’s 14-yard rushing score gave the Pirates a 27-14 lead.

The Spartans clawed back before halftime, with X’Zavion Evans plunging in from a yard out to cut the deficit to 27-21 at the break.

Norfolk State pulled within three points on a 28-yard field goal from Marco Peery in the third quarter, but Hampton answered with a 4-yard Jah’Kei Chavis touchdown run to extend its lead to 34-24.

The fourth quarter saw the Spartans mount a final charge. Kuhns hit Ikeem Wright for an 18-yard touchdown strike, tying the game at 34 with 10:23 left. The momentum was short-lived, however, as Davis engineered the game-winning drive, capping it with his decisive 21-yard scramble.

Davis, the Pirates’ quarterback from Middletown, Delaware, finished with 202 yards and a touchdown through the air on 16-of-28 passing, while adding 64 yards and the crucial score on the ground.

Kuhns was dynamic in defeat for Norfolk State, throwing for 242 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 54 yards. His top target was Kendrick, who amassed 120 receiving yards and a touchdown on just two catches. Evans anchored the Spartans’ ground game, carrying the ball 21 times for 93 yards and a touchdown.

Hampton’s ground attack was a multi-headed monster. Goldsmith led the way with 75 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, while Chavis added 42 yards and a score. Ferguson contributed 26 rushing yards, a receiving touchdown, and a 14-yard rushing score.

The game was a costly one for both teams, as the loss drops Norfolk State to 1-4 on the season, while Hampton evened its record at 1-4. The Pirates’ victory defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which had given Hampton an 86.9% probability to win and projected a 39-27 final score. The combined 75 points sailed over the sportsbook over/under line of 54.5.

Norfolk State travels to face Wofford next Saturday. Hampton returns to action at home against Campbell.
