Hampton outlasts Norfolk State in high-scoring rivalry game

HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth Battle of the Bay that defied pregame projections, the Hampton Pirates outlasted the Norfolk State Spartans 41-34 on Saturday at Armstrong Stadium, with quarterback Braden Davis’ 21-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter proving to be the decisive score.

The game, a high-scoring affair that saw the teams combine for 75 points, was a stark contrast to the statistical expectations. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a lower-scoring Hampton victory, 39-27, and its ELO system gave the Pirates an 86.90 percent probability to win, with Norfolk State installed as a +6 underdog. The total score of 75 easily surpassed the over/under line of 54.5.

The victory was the first of the season for Hampton, lifting its record to 1-4. Norfolk State, which had shown flashes of promise in a close loss to Sacred Heart and a win over Virginia State earlier in the season, fell to an identical 1-4 mark.

The contest began at a breakneck pace. Hampton opened the scoring with a 39-yard field goal from hometown kicker Brett Starling, but Norfolk State’s offense immediately answered. Spartans quarterback Otto Kuhns, who had a dynamic afternoon, connected with DreSean Kendrick on a 65-yard touchdown pass on just the third play of the ensuing drive, giving Norfolk State an early lead.

The Spartans extended their advantage later in the first quarter. A methodical drive, fueled by the running of X’Zavion Evans and a key 22-yard scramble by Kuhns, was capped by a 9-yard touchdown pass from Kuhns to Jaylen Laudermilk. Norfolk State led 14-3.

Hampton responded with a touchdown of its own, a 7-yard pass from Davis to Donovan Shepard, to close the first quarter at 14-10.

Norfolk State reclaimed a two-score lead early in the second quarter. Evans, who was a workhorse for the Spartans, finished a dominant drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge, making it 21-10. The Pirates, however, seized momentum with a quick-strike answer. Running back Gracen Goldsmith broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 21-17.

The game then turned on a pair of costly Norfolk State fumbles. The first, by Evans, was recovered by Hampton defensive back Will Hicks. Though the Pirates settled for a 25-yard Starling field goal, they got the ball right back when Laudermilk fumbled on the next possession, with Hampton’s Korede Sogbesan making the recovery.

Capitalizing on the short field, Hampton took its first lead since the opening minutes. A 14-yard touchdown run by MarShawn Ferguson with 1:29 left in the half sent the Pirates into the locker room with a 27-21 advantage.

The third quarter was a defensive struggle compared to the first half. Norfolk State managed only a 28-yard field goal from Marco Peery after a promising drive stalled inside the Hampton 10. The Pirates responded with a touchdown, as Jah’Kei Chavis powered in from 4 yards out to restore a 10-point lead at 34-24.

Trailing by 10 in the fourth quarter, the Spartans mounted a comeback. Kuhns engineered a drive that he finished with an 18-yard touchdown strike to tight end Ikeem Wright, tying the game at 34 with 10:23 remaining.

The tie was short-lived. On Hampton’s very next offensive play, Davis found Maxwell Moss for a 30-yard gain down to the Norfolk State 20. Two plays later, Davis called his own number, scrambling 21 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 8:52 on the clock.

Norfolk State had two more possessions to try and force another tie. The first ended with a 29-yard Peery field goal after the drive stalled at the Hampton 13, pulling the Spartans within seven at 41-34 with just over four minutes to play.

The Spartans’ final hope rested on getting a defensive stop, but the Hampton ground game, led by Goldsmith and Chavis, effectively ran out the clock, picking up three critical first downs to seal the victory.

Kuhns was a dual threat for Norfolk State, completing 15 of 26 passes for 242 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 54 yards on seven carries. Evans was the engine of the offense, carrying the ball 21 times for 93 yards and a touchdown. Kendrick was the big-play receiver, hauling in two passes for 120 yards and a score.

For Hampton, Davis efficiently managed the game, completing 16 of 28 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns while leading the team in rushing with 64 yards and the game-winning score on 14 attempts. Goldsmith was a force out of the backfield, rushing for 75 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. The Pirates’ defense, led by Hicks and Sogbesan, created the two crucial turnovers that swung the game in the second quarter.

Both teams will look to build on the offensive performances next Saturday. Norfolk State travels to face Wofford, while Hampton returns to Armstrong Stadium to host Campbell.
