Fordham at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game that defied pregame projections, the Lafayette Leopards used a dominant defensive performance and a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Fordham Rams 24 to 10 on Saturday at Fisher Stadium.

Entering the contest as a two-touchdown underdog according to the betting line, Lafayette controlled the game from the second quarter onward, improving its season record to 3-2. Fordham, which was surprisingly favored by statistical models despite its record, fell to 1-4 with the loss. The combined point total of 34 fell well below the over/under line of 63.5.

The first quarter was a defensive struggle, with both teams trading punts and failing to sustain drives. The deadlock was broken early in the second quarter when Lafayette quarterback Dean DeNobile engineered a methodical scoring drive. The junior from Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, capped the series with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Scerbo, giving the Leopards a 7-0 lead.

Lafayette’s defense quickly forced a three-and-out, and DeNobile went back to work. He led the Leopards on another impressive drive, showcasing his efficiency by completing a 3-yard scoring strike to Carson Persing with 3:52 remaining in the half. The touchdown extended the Lafayette lead to 14-0, a margin they would carry into halftime.

The Leopards received the second-half kickoff and effectively put the game out of reach. They marched down the field on their opening possession of the third quarter, consuming large chunks of the clock and the field. The drive culminated in a short touchdown run, pushing their advantage to 21-0 and silencing any hopes of a Fordham comeback.

The Rams, who had been stymied by the Lafayette defense for three quarters, finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Gunnar Smith connected with Troy Worrell on a 4-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 21-7. Smith, a sophomore from Lake Mary, Florida, put up substantial numbers, completing 32 of 45 passes for 354 yards and the one touchdown, but was often under pressure and unable to finish drives in Lafayette territory.

Fordham added a 35-yard field goal from Bennett Henderson later in the final period to pull within 21-10, but any lingering momentum was extinguished on the ensuing possession. Smith’s pass was intercepted by Lafayette defensive back Kevin Dodard of Fort Worth, Texas, effectively sealing the outcome. The Leopards added a 19-yard field goal from Jack Simonetta with 4:38 remaining for the final margin of 24-10.

DeNobile was the catalyst for the Lafayette offense, completing 25 of 35 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite targets were Elijah Steward, who caught five passes for 85 yards, and Carson Persing, who hauled in four passes for 84 yards and a score. The ground game was led by Ethan Weber, who carried the ball 19 times for 67 yards.

Defensively, Lafayette was led by linebacker Beckham Dee and a unit that consistently harassed Smith, recording multiple sacks and key pass breakups. The Leopards held a Fordham rushing attack that managed only 75 total yards.

Fordham’s offensive highlights came primarily through the air, with Jack Freeburg making five receptions for 113 yards and Troy Worrell adding four catches for 91 yards and a touchdown.

Lafayette will look to build on this victory when it hosts Bucknell on Oct. 11. Fordham, seeking to right its season, has a bye next week before hosting Dartmouth on Oct. 18.
