Lafayette Rides Strong Second Quarter to Defeat Fordham

EASTON, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game that defied pregame projections, the Lafayette Leopards used a dominant defensive performance and a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Fordham Rams 24 to 10 in a nonconference football game Saturday at Fisher Stadium.

The contest was a stark reversal of expectations, as Interstat’s game simulator had projected a high-scoring affair with Fordham winning 34-31. Instead, Lafayette’s defense stifled the Rams for three quarters, while their offense steadily built an insurmountable lead.

The first quarter was a defensive struggle, with both teams trading punts and failing to find the end zone. Fordham’s best early drive was thwarted when Lafayette linebacker Beckham Dee recovered a fumble by Rams quarterback Gunnar Smith late in the period, snuffing out a promising drive that had reached the Leopards’ 18-yard line.

Lafayette’s offense finally broke through in the second quarter. Quarterback Dean DeNobile, a junior from Upper Saddle River, N.J., engineered a methodical drive that culminated in a 6-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Scerbo, a 6-foot-2 receiver from Phillipsburg, N.J., tying the game.

The Leopards seized momentum on their next possession. DeNobile connected on a 34-yard pass to Elijah Steward and a 29-yard strike to Scerbo, setting up first-and-goal. A few plays later, DeNobile found Carson Persing for a 3-yard touchdown pass, giving Lafayette a 14-point lead heading into halftime.

The Leopards extended their advantage in the third quarter. After a blocked Fordham punt was returned 18 yards for a touchdown by long snapper Dylan Aguilera, Lafayette held a commanding 21-point lead. The Rams’ offense, which had moved the ball between the 20-yard lines for much of the game, continued to be stymied by the Leopards’ defense and a series of drive-killing penalties and sacks.

Fordham finally got on the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter. Smith, the 6-foot-5 quarterback from Lake Mary, Fla., capped a 12-play, 76-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Troy Worrell, cutting the deficit to 21 to 7.

The Rams’ defense forced a quick punt, and Smith again drove Fordham deep into Lafayette territory. The drive stalled at the 8-yard line, forcing the Rams to settle for a 35-yard field goal from Bennett Henderson, making the score 21 to 10 with just over nine minutes remaining.

Any hope of a late Fordham comeback was extinguished on the ensuing possession. DeNobile immediately hit Persing on a 63-yard bomb down to the Fordham 12-yard line. While the Leopards’ offense could not punch it into the end zone, they drained over four minutes off the clock before Jack Simonetta connected on a 19-yard field goal to push the lead back to 14 points with 4:38 left.

Fordham’s final attempt to rally ended when Smith was intercepted by Lafayette defensive back Kevin Dodard with just over four minutes remaining, sealing the victory for the home team.

Statistically, the game was a tale of two quarterbacks navigating vastly different fortunes. Fordham’s Gunnar Smith put up prolific numbers, completing 32 of 45 passes for 354 yards and one touchdown. His top targets were Jack Freeburg, who had five catches for 113 yards, and Troy Worrell, who added four receptions for 91 yards and a score. However, Smith was sacked five times, lost a fumble, and threw a critical interception.

Lafayette’s Dean DeNobile was highly efficient, completing 25 of 35 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns. He spread the ball effectively, with Elijah Steward catching five passes for 85 yards and Carson Persing adding four receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Ethan Weber carried the load with 19 rushes for 67 yards.

Defensively, Lafayette was led by Beckham Dee, who had a fumble recovery and shared a sack, and Kevin Dodard, whose fourth-quarter interception sealed the game.

With the win, Lafayette improves its season record to 3 wins and 2 losses. The Leopards will look to build on this momentum when they host Bucknell next Saturday.

Fordham falls to 1 win and 4 losses on the season. The Rams, who were coming off a victory over Holy Cross, will have a bye next week before hosting Dartmouth on Oct. 18.
