Bucknell Rallies Past Richmond in High-Scoring Affair
LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of fortune, the Bucknell Bison erased a three-touchdown, first-quarter deficit to defeat the Richmond Spiders 33-28 in a non-conference football thriller Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
The victory, sealed by a Nate Anderson 20-yard touchdown reception from Ralph Rucker IV with just over two minutes remaining, improved both teams to 3-2 on the season. The contest defied pregame projections, as Richmond entered as a significant favorite according to analytics, while Bucknell had been installed as a 4.5-point favorite by oddsmakers.
The game began as a afternoonmare for the home team. Richmond quarterback Ashten Snelsire, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound junior from Berlin, Maryland, needed just over two minutes to carve through the Bison defense. He capped the opening drive with a 24-yard touchdown strike to Isaiah Dawson. After forcing a Bucknell punt, the Spiders’ offense again moved with ease, culminating in another Snelsire-to-Dawson connection, this time from 25 yards out, to take a commanding 14-0 lead with 5:41 still remaining in the opening quarter.
Bucknell responded with a methodical 13-play, 72-yard drive, finished by a 4-yard Michael Cadden touchdown run to cut the lead to 14-7. But the Spiders’ offensive onslaught continued unabated. Snelsire found Andrew King for a 25-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter, pushing the Richmond lead to 21-7 and seemingly putting the game out of reach.
The Bison, however, began to claw back before halftime. A 1-yard touchdown plunge by Logan Bush and a 31-yard field goal from Matt Schearer as time expired in the half narrowed the gap to 21-17, providing a critical momentum shift.
The second half became a defensive struggle, with Bucknell’s secondary beginning to solve the previously unstoppable Snelsire. The Bison tied the game at 21-21 on their first possession of the third quarter, with Cadden scoring his second touchdown from 2 yards out. Richmond answered immediately, as Snelsire engineered a quick drive and hit Ja’Vion Griffin for a 25-yard score to retake the lead at 28-24.
The fourth quarter belonged to Bucknell’s defense and the steady hand of Rucker. After Schearer connected on a 27-yard field goal to bring the Bison within one point at 28-27, the Richmond offense, which had been so potent early, began to sputter. The Spiders’ final two possessions ended in disaster. The first stalled near midfield, and the second, starting with 2:13 left on the clock and a chance to run out the clock, ended abruptly when Snelsire’s pass was intercepted by safety Darius Day.
Given new life, Rucker and the Bison offense took over. Facing a critical third down, Rucker found Anderson in the end zone for the go-ahead score. A failed two-point conversion attempt left the door open for Richmond, but the Spiders’ last-gasp drive ended with a second interception, this time by linebacker Brandon Biagiarelli, sealing the improbable comeback victory.
Statistically, the game was a tale of two halves. Snelsire finished with an impressive line, completing 16 of 27 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 51 yards on the ground. His primary target was Dawson, who hauled in six catches for 144 yards and two scores. Running back Aziz Foster-Powell provided a powerful ground attack, rushing for 108 yards on just eight carries.
For Bucknell, Rucker was the model of efficiency, completing 24 of 34 passes for 284 yards and the game-winning touchdown. His favorite target was Sam Milligan, who dominated the middle of the field with 11 receptions for 133 yards. The Bison defense, despite the early barrage, made critical plays when it mattered most, intercepting Snelsire three times in the second half.
The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for Richmond, which had previously defeated Howard and Virginia Military Institute. The Spiders will look to rebound next Saturday when they travel to face Colgate.
Bucknell, which has now won two of its last three, will carry the momentum from this dramatic victory into its next contest on the road against Lafayette.
