Prairie View at Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed opportunities and a final-minute stand, the Prairie View A&M Panthers escaped Spinks-Casem Stadium with a 13-12 victory over the Alcorn State Braves on Saturday.

The game, a stark contrast to the high-scoring affair projected by pregame simulations, was decided by a combination of stingy defense and critical special teams plays. A missed 41-yard field goal attempt by Alcorn State’s Lorenzo Garcia with 39 seconds remaining sealed the win for the visiting Panthers.

Prairie View improved its season record to 3-2, while Alcorn State’s frustrating start to the year continued, dropping to 0-4.

The contest was a low-scoring, field position battle from the outset. Prairie View drew first blood on its opening drive, capping a methodical 16-play, 71-yard march with a 21-yard field goal from Aiden Webb. Alcorn State answered later in the first quarter with a 30-yard field goal from Garcia, making the score 3-3.

The Panthers broke the deadlock late in the second quarter. Quarterback Cameron Peters, who shared time under center with Tevin Carter, engineered a key drive, using his legs for a 16-yard scramble to set up the offense in the red zone. Two plays later, Peters connected with receiver Jyzaiah Rockwell on a 13-yard touchdown pass. The score gave Prairie View a 10-3 lead heading into halftime.

Alcorn State’s offense, which had sputtered for much of the first half, found a spark in the third quarter. On the first play following a missed 38-yard field goal by Prairie View’s Webb, Braves quarterback Jaylon Tolbert unleashed a deep pass to Jacoby Matthews, who hauled it in for a 71-yard gain down to the Panthers’ 4-yard line. Two plays later, running back Reggie Davis powered into the end zone from 2 yards out.

The Braves opted to go for a two-point conversion in an attempt to take the lead, but the try failed, leaving Prairie View ahead 10-9.

The Panthers responded by extending their lead on the first play of the fourth quarter. Diego Alfaro drilled a 44-yard field goal to push the advantage to 13-9.

Alcorn State’s final drive began with 3:46 left on the clock. Tolbert, a sophomore from Hollywood, Florida, moved the Braves efficiently, overcoming a sack and connecting with Jarvis Rush for a 31-yard gain to get into Prairie View territory. The drive stalled, however, setting up Garcia’s potential game-winning 41-yard field goal attempt, which sailed wide left.

Prairie View’s offense was led by a dual-quarterback system. Peters, from Missouri City, Texas, completed 15 of 22 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown while also leading the team in rushing with 66 yards on 11 carries. Carter, from Memphis, Tennessee, was efficient, completing 8 of 11 passes for 68 yards. Running back Connor Wisham provided a steady ground presence, rushing for 51 yards on 12 attempts. Rockwell was the primary receiving target, catching seven passes for 45 yards and the game’s only touchdown.

For Alcorn State, Tolbert finished 11 of 22 for 176 yards but was sacked four times and threw a critical interception to Prairie View defensive back Eric Zachery in the fourth quarter. Matthews was the standout for the Braves’ offense, catching four passes for 88 yards and adding 22 yards on a single rushing attempt. Davis finished with 41 rushing yards and the team’s sole touchdown.

The Panthers’ defense was instrumental in the victory, consistently pressuring Tolbert and making key stops in crucial moments. The unit held firm on Alcorn State’s final two drives to preserve the narrow margin.

Prairie View A&M will look to build on the win when they travel to face Southern on Oct. 18. Alcorn State will attempt to secure its first victory of the season next Saturday at home against Lincoln (California).
