Prairie View edges Alcorn State in defensive struggle
LORMAN, Miss. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle that defied pregame projections, the Prairie View A&M Panthers eked out a 13-12 victory over the Alcorn State Braves on Saturday at Spinks-Casem Stadium, handing the winless Braves another heartbreaking loss.
The game, a far cry from the high-scoring affair predicted by statistical models, was ultimately decided by a missed 41-yard field goal attempt by Alcorn State’s Lorenzo Garcia with 39 seconds remaining. The kick sailed wide, preserving a narrow lead for Prairie View that felt tenuous throughout the second half.
Prairie View improved to 3-2 on the season, while Alcorn State’s frustrating start to the year continued, dropping them to 0-4.
The contest was a story of missed opportunities and stout defensive stands. Both offenses moved the ball at times but consistently stalled in the red zone, leading to a combined five field goal attempts. Only two of those kicks were successful.
Prairie View established an early lead with a methodical 16-play, 71-yard opening drive that consumed nearly seven minutes of clock. The drive, however, stalled at the Alcorn State 4-yard line, forcing the Panthers to settle for a 21-yard Aiden Webb field goal.
Alcorn State responded in kind, putting together a promising drive of its own. A key 11-yard completion from quarterback Jaylon Tolbert to Jacoby Matthews helped move the Braves into scoring position, but the Prairie View defense, led by a sack from Malik Gucake, stiffened. Lorenzo Garcia connected from 30 yards out to tie the game at 3-3 late in the first quarter.
The Panthers’ offense, utilizing a two-quarterback system with Tevin Carter and Cameron Peters, found a rhythm in the second quarter. Peters, who provided a dynamic rushing threat, broke off runs of 17 and 16 yards to set up the game’s only touchdown. From the Alcorn State 13, Peters found a wide-open Jyzaiah Rockwell for a scoring strike, giving Prairie View a 10-3 lead after Webb’s extra point.
Alcorn State had a chance to cut into the deficit before halftime, driving into Prairie View territory in the final minute. Tolbert completed passes to Omarion Blakes and Jarvis Rush to move the Braves to the Panthers’ 11-yard line, but the drive ended with an incomplete pass into the end zone as time expired, sending Prairie View into the break with a seven-point advantage.
The momentum shifted dramatically in the third quarter. After a missed 38-yard field goal by Prairie View’s Webb, the Braves struck instantly. On the very next play, Tolbert launched a deep ball to a streaking Jacoby Matthews, who hauled in the pass for a 71-yard gain down to the Prairie View 4-yard line. Two plays later, Reggie Davis powered in from 2 yards out for a touchdown.
The Braves, however, failed to tie the game. Their two-point conversion attempt, a pass from Tolbert, was broken up in the end zone, leaving Alcorn State trailing 10-9. The missed opportunity would loom large as the game progressed.
Prairie View extended its lead early in the fourth quarter. A drive spearheaded by Peters and running back Connor Wisham moved the Panthers into field goal range, where Diego Alfaro drilled a 44-yard kick to make the score 13-9.
The Braves’ offense continued to sputter, hampered by penalties and a relentless Prairie View pass rush. With just over five minutes remaining, Alcorn State’s hopes seemed to dim when Tolbert was intercepted by Prairie View defensive back Eric Zachery.
But the Panthers were unable to run out the clock, giving the Braves one final possession with 1:56 left on the clock. Tolbert, under heavy pressure, engineered a desperate drive. Facing a fourth-and-10, he found Jarvis Rush for a 31-yard completion to the Prairie View 28, breathing life into the Alcorn State sideline.
The drive stalled from there. A sack by Darrell Starling pushed the Braves back, and after an incomplete pass, they were forced to attempt a 41-yard field goal to take the lead. Garcia’s kick, however, was off the mark, sealing the victory for Prairie View.
Statistically, the game was a defensive affair. Prairie View’s Cameron Peters was effective as a dual-threat, completing 15 of 22 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown while adding 66 rushing yards on 11 carries. Tevin Carter started and was efficient, completing 8 of 11 passes for 68 yards. Connor Wisham led the Panthers’ ground game with 51 yards on 12 carries, while Jyzaiah Rockwell was the top receiver with 7 catches for 45 yards and a score.
For Alcorn State, Jaylon Tolbert finished 11 of 22 for 176 yards but was sacked four times and threw a critical interception. Jacoby Matthews was a bright spot, catching 4 passes for 88 yards, including the 71-yard reception that set up the Braves’ lone touchdown. Reggie Davis rushed for 41 yards and the touchdown on 11 carries.
The Panthers’ defense was the difference, consistently pressuring Tolbert and making crucial stops in the red zone. The unit held firm on the final drive to secure the road win.
Prairie View A&M will look to build on the victory when they travel to face Southern on Oct. 18. Alcorn State, still in search of its first win, will host Lincoln (California) next Saturday.
