Tulsa at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Memphis Tigers remained undefeated, delivering a dominant 45-7 victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in an American Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

Quarterback Brendon Lewis orchestrated a relentless offensive attack for Memphis, now 5-0, while the Tigers’ defense forced four turnovers to stifle any hope of a Tulsa upset. The Golden Hurricane fell to 2-3 with the loss.

Memphis set the tone early, answering Tulsa’s opening possession with a methodical 11-play, 64-yard drive. Lewis capped the series with a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Matt Adcock, knotting the score at 7-7 after the first quarter.

The second quarter belonged entirely to the Tigers, who exploded for 21 points to seize control of the game. Lewis broke the tie with a 26-yard run to ignite a scoring drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown run by Sutton Smith. After Tulsa quarterback Kirk Francis connected with Micah Tease for a 34-yard touchdown to pull within a score, the Memphis offense continued its onslaught.

Lewis, who finished 22 of 30 for 266 yards and three touchdowns while adding 67 yards on the ground, led two more scoring drives before halftime. He found Cortez Braham Jr. for a 14-yard touchdown pass and then punched in a 4-yard rushing touchdown himself with just over a minute remaining in the half, sending the Tigers into the break with a commanding 28-7 lead.

The Memphis defense was instrumental in the blowout, intercepting Francis three times. Elijah Green of Tulsa picked off two passes, but it was the Tigers’ Samson Israel, Chris Bracy and Kamari Wilson who each recorded interceptions that halted Golden Hurricane drives.

Any chance of a Tulsa comeback was extinguished in the third quarter as the Tigers added 10 more points. Kicker Gianni Spetic nailed a 50-yard field goal, and Lewis threw his third touchdown of the day, a 2-yard pass to Greg Desrosiers Jr., to extend the lead to 38-7.

Backup quarterback Arrington Maiden entered the game for Memphis in the fourth quarter and helped put the final exclamation point on the win. His 18-yard run set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Frank Peasant, bringing the score to its final margin of 45-7.

Lewis’ top target was Jamari Hawkins, who hauled in seven receptions for 110 yards. For Tulsa, Francis completed 20 of 34 passes for 175 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions under constant pressure from a swarming Memphis defense that recorded multiple tackles for loss.

The Tigers’ victory exceeded the projections of Interstat’s game simulator, which had predicted a closer 35-27 Memphis win. The Tigers will look to continue their perfect season on the road next Saturday against UAB. Tulsa, which has now lost two straight, enters a bye week before traveling to face East Carolina on Thursday, Oct. 16.
