Memphis Stays Unbeaten With Dominant Win Over Tulsa
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a commanding display on both sides of the ball, the undefeated Memphis Tigers dismantled the visiting Tulsa Golden Hurricane 45 to 7 on Saturday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
The victory, fueled by a dominant 21-point second quarter and a stifling defensive effort that forced four turnovers, improved Memphis to a perfect 5 wins and 0 losses on the season. Tulsa, meanwhile, saw its record fall to 2 wins and 3 losses.
Memphis quarterback Brendon Lewis orchestrated the offensive onslaught, efficiently dissecting the Tulsa defense. The junior from Melissa, Texas, completed 22 of 30 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns, adding another 67 yards on 14 carries. His performance was the engine of a Tigers offense that consistently moved the chains and capitalized on Tulsa mistakes.
The game began with a brief flicker of hope for the Golden Hurricane. After forcing a Memphis punt on the opening drive, Tulsa quarterback Kirk Francis engineered a scoring drive that culminated in a 34-yard touchdown pass to Micah Tease late in the first quarter. That 7 to 0 lead, however, would be the high-water mark for the visitors.
Memphis responded immediately, marching 64 yards on a methodical 11-play drive that Lewis capped with a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Matt Adcock, knotting the score at 7 to 7.
The second quarter belonged entirely to the Tigers. They seized control with a 75-yard drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown run by Sutton Smith. After Tulsa answered with its lone score, the Memphis defense took over. On the ensuing Golden Hurricane possession, defensive back Elijah Green snagged his first interception of the day, halting a potential scoring opportunity.
The Tigers’ defense continued to apply pressure, leading to a second Green interception. This time, the turnover set up a short field, and Lewis quickly found Cortez Braham Jr. for a 14-yard touchdown strike, extending the lead to 21 to 7.
Just before halftime, the Memphis defense delivered another crushing blow. With Tulsa attempting to mount a two-minute drill, safety Kamari Wilson intercepted a Francis pass and returned it to the Tulsa 27-yard line. Lewis then took matters into his own hands, scrambling for an 8-yard gain and later punching in a 4-yard touchdown run with just over a minute left, sending the Tigers into the locker room with a commanding 28 to 7 advantage.
Any notion of a Tulsa comeback was extinguished in the third quarter. Memphis picked up where it left off, with Gianni Spetic connecting on a 50-yard field goal. On Tulsa’s next offensive snap, Francis was intercepted for the third time, this time by defensive back Samson Israel.
The Tigers put the game completely out of reach late in the third quarter with another sustained drive. Lewis finished it with his third touchdown pass, a 2-yard flip to Greg Desrosiers Jr., making the score 38 to 7.
Memphis added a final exclamation point in the fourth quarter. Backup quarterback Arrington Maiden, a College Station, Texas, native, entered the game and broke off runs of 10 and 18 yards to set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Frank Peasant, bringing the score to its final margin of 45 to 7.
Defensively, the Tigers were relentless. Safety Kamari Wilson led the team with eight tackles to go with his critical interception. The linebacker corps of DeMarco Ward and Drue Watts each added six tackles, with Watts also recording a quarterback hurry. As a unit, Memphis held Tulsa to just 175 passing yards and consistently disrupted the Golden Hurricane’s offensive rhythm.
For Tulsa, quarterback Kirk Francis from Tulsa, Oklahoma, finished 20 of 34 for 175 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions under constant duress. Linebacker William Alexander of Magnolia, Texas, was a bright spot on defense, recording a game-high nine tackles.
The lopsided result defied the pregame spread, which had Tulsa as a 21.5-point underdog, and easily surpassed the over/under total of 54.5. It also far exceeded the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a much closer Memphis 35 to 27 victory. The Tigers’ ELO probability to win was listed at 99 percent.
Memphis looks to continue its perfect season on the road next Saturday, Oct. 18, against UAB. Tulsa, after a bye week, will travel to face East Carolina on Thursday, Oct. 16.
