Baylor Rolls Past Oklahoma State Behind Robertson’s 4 Touchdowns
STILLWATER, Okla. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of pregame expectations, the Baylor Bears delivered a commanding performance to defeat the Oklahoma State Cowboys 45 to 27 on Saturday afternoon at Boone Pickens Stadium.
Entering the contest as a three-touchdown underdog, Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson dismantled the Cowboys’ defense, leading an offensive onslaught that saw the Bears improve to 2-2 on the season. Oklahoma State, favored by 21.5 points, fell to 1-2 with the loss.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Baylor seizing control early and never relinquishing it. The Bears set the tone on their opening drive, marching 78 yards in just four plays. The series was capped by a 34-yard touchdown pass from Robertson to Kole Wilson, giving Baylor a 7-0 lead with 12:27 remaining in the first quarter.
Oklahoma State responded with a methodical 15-play, 97-yard drive that consumed over seven minutes of clock. The Cowboys utilized a two-quarterback system effectively, with Sam Jackson V connecting with Josh Ford on a 26-yard scoring strike to tie the game.
Any momentum the Cowboys gained was immediately extinguished. Baylor exploded for 21 points in the second quarter, starting with a 19-yard touchdown run by Bryson Washington just 17 seconds into the period. Robertson then found tight end Matthew Klopfenstein for a 6-yard score, extending the lead to 21-7.
After an Oklahoma State field goal, the Bears’ offense continued its relentless pace. Robertson engineered another scoring drive, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown pass to Michael Trigg, pushing the advantage to 28-10. The Cowboys managed a second field goal from Logan Ward just before halftime, but Baylor held a commanding 28-13 lead at the break.
The Bears picked up right where they left off to start the second half. On the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Robertson unleashed a 73-yard touchdown bomb to Kobe Prentice, stretching the lead to 35-13 just 50 seconds into the period.
Oklahoma State found a brief spark late in the third quarter. A 39-yard completion from Zane Flores to Shamar Rigby set up a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Trent Howland, cutting the deficit to 35-20.
Baylor, however, methodically put the game away in the fourth quarter. A 36-yard field goal from Connor Hawkins was followed by a 2-yard touchdown run by Robertson, his fourth passing touchdown of the game coupled with a rushing score, to make it 45-20 and effectively seal the victory. A final, late score by Oklahoma State did little to change the outcome.
Robertson, a Lubbock, Texas, native, was the star of the afternoon, finishing 24 of 35 for 393 yards and four touchdowns through the air, adding another score on the ground. His performance was the driving force behind an offense that consistently gashed the Cowboys’ defense.
In contrast, the Oklahoma State quarterback duo of Flores and Jackson V struggled to find consistent success against a determined Baylor defense. Flores completed 23 of 41 passes for 232 yards, while Jackson V added 46 yards and a touchdown through the air. The Cowboys’ defense was led by Bryan McCoy Jr., who recorded eight tackles, and a host of other defenders who posted high tackle numbers but failed to contain the Bears’ explosive plays.
The final score of 72 total points sailed well over the pregame over/under line of 58.5, a direct result of Baylor’s offensive explosion. The result also confounded the projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had predicted an Oklahoma State victory, 34-25, despite its ELO system giving Baylor a 68 percent probability to win.
Baylor, now sitting at .500, will look to build on this momentum when they host Kansas State next Saturday. Oklahoma State, searching for answers after a second consecutive loss, will hit the road to face Arizona.
