LSU at Ole Miss
OXFORD, Miss. (Interstat) — In a pivotal early-season Southeastern Conference West showdown between unbeaten teams, Ole Miss outlasted LSU 24-19 on Saturday afternoon at a raucous Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
A crowd of 67,737 watched as the Rebels, propelled by a dominant second-quarter surge and a gritty, game-sealing final drive, handed the Tigers their first loss of the season.
LSU struck first, capitalizing on a 50-yard connection from quarterback Garrett Nussmeier to Zavion Thomas that set up a 7-yard touchdown pass to Nic Anderson. The Tigers led 7-0 midway through the opening quarter.
Ole Miss answered with a methodical 16-play, 72-yard drive, but the LSU defense held firm in the red zone, forcing the Rebels to settle for a 25-yard Lucas Carneiro field goal to make the score 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The momentum shifted decisively in the second quarter. After LSU’s Nussmeier was intercepted by Wydett Williams Jr. on a deep pass, the Ole Miss offense found its rhythm. A key defensive pass interference penalty on LSU in the end zone set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Kewan Lacy, giving the Rebels their first lead at 10-7.
Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss then engineered a masterful two-minute drill just before halftime. He marched the Rebels 69 yards in just over a minute, capping the drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Cayden Lee with 13 seconds remaining. The score sent the Rebels into the locker room with a 17-7 advantage and all the momentum.
LSU’s offense, stymied for much of the first half, could only manage a pair of Damian Ramos field goals in the third quarter, from 39 and 48 yards, to close the gap to 17-13.
Ole Miss responded with a critical touchdown early in the fourth quarter. A 6-yard scoring run by Logan Diggs extended the Rebels’ lead to 24-13, putting significant pressure on the Tigers.
LSU answered with its own sustained drive, culminating in a 6-yard Harlem Berry touchdown run with just over five minutes to play. The Tigers failed on the two-point conversion attempt, leaving the score at 24-19.
Needing a stop to get the ball back, the LSU defense could not contain the Ole Miss offense. The Rebels embarked on a clock-killing, 11-play drive that consumed the final 4:56 of the game. Chambliss and Lacy combined for key first downs, with Chambliss’ 20-yard completion to Dae’Quan Wright on third down effectively sealing the victory.
Chambliss, the Ole Miss quarterback from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was the catalyst for the Rebels, completing 23 of 39 passes for 314 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 71 yards on 14 carries. Lacy, the workhorse running back from Dallas, Texas, carried the ball 23 times for 87 yards and a touchdown, adding three receptions for 21 yards.
Nussmeier, LSU’s quarterback from Lake Charles, Louisiana, finished 21 of 34 for 197 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Tigers’ offense struggled to find consistency against an aggressive Ole Miss defense led by linebacker Suntarine Perkins, who had seven tackles, and defensive end Kam Franklin, who recorded four quarterback hurries.
LSU safety A.J. Haulcy was a standout on a losing effort, registering a game-high 13 tackles.
With the win, Ole Miss improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the SEC. LSU falls to 4-1 and 0-1 in conference play. The Rebels will host Washington State next Saturday, while LSU has a bye week before facing South Carolina on Oct. 11.
