Ole Miss Outlasts LSU in Defensive Battle to Stay Undefeated
OXFORD, Miss. (Interstat) — In a pivotal early-season Southeastern Conference West Division clash between unbeaten teams, Ole Miss outlasted LSU 24-19 on Saturday afternoon before a sellout crowd of 67,737 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
The Rebels, propelled by a dynamic dual-threat performance from quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and a relentless defensive effort, overcame an early deficit to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season.
LSU struck first, capitalizing on a 50-yard connection from quarterback Garrett Nussmeier to Zavion Thomas on their opening drive. Nussmeier capped the series with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Nic Anderson, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Ole Miss responded with a methodical 16-play, 72-yard drive that consumed over seven minutes of clock. The LSU defense stiffened inside its own 10-yard line, forcing the Rebels to settle for a 25-yard Lucas Carneiro field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 as the first quarter expired.
The momentum shifted decisively in the second quarter. After an interception by Ole Miss defensive back Wydett Williams Jr. halted a promising LSU drive, the Rebels’ offense found its rhythm. A 15-yard touchdown run by Kewan Lacy finished a drive aided by LSU penalties, tying the game at 10.
Ole Miss took the lead just before halftime. Chambliss engineered a masterful two-minute drill, moving the Rebels 69 yards in just over a minute. He found Cayden Lee on a 2-yard scoring pass with 13 seconds remaining in the half, sending the Rebels into the locker room with a 17-10 advantage.
The third quarter became a defensive battle, with LSU’s offense struggling to sustain drives against a swarming Ole Miss front. The Tigers managed only a pair of Damian Ramos field goals, from 39 and 48 yards, to close the gap to 17-16 heading into the final period.
Ole Miss extended its lead early in the fourth quarter. A 10-play, 77-yard drive was capped by a 6-yard touchdown run from Logan Diggs, pushing the Rebel lead to 24-16.
LSU answered with a determined 14-play, 80-yard march of its own. Harlem Berry plunged in from 6 yards out to pull the Tigers within two points at 24-22 with just over five minutes remaining. However, the potential game-tying two-point conversion attempt failed when Nussmeier’s pass fell incomplete in the end zone.
Needing a stop, the LSU defense could not get the Rebels off the field. Ole Miss converted two critical third downs on its final possession, with Chambliss scrambling for one and hitting Dae’Quan Wright for a 20-yard gain on another, allowing the Rebels to run out the clock and secure the victory.
Chambliss, the sophomore from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was the catalyst for the Ole Miss offense. He completed 23 of 39 passes for 314 yards and one touchdown while also leading the team in rushing with 71 yards on 14 carries. Lacy added 87 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 attempts, and Lee led all receivers with 70 yards and a touchdown on four catches.
The Ole Miss defense was the difference, consistently pressuring Nussmeier and limiting the Tigers’ big-play capability. The unit registered five quarterback hurries and one sack, credited to Will Echoles. Linebacker Suntarine Perkins led all defenders with seven tackles, while safety A.J. Haulcy had a game-high 13 tackles for LSU.
Nussmeier finished 21 of 34 for 197 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Tigers. Thomas was his top target, hauling in three passes for 63 yards and adding 50 yards on one critical reception.
With the win, Ole Miss improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the SEC. LSU falls to 4-1 and 0-1 in conference play. The Rebels will host Washington State next Saturday, while the Tigers return home to face South Carolina on Oct. 11.
