Chattanooga at Tarleton State
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — Tarleton State remained unbeaten Saturday, using a dominant second quarter to pull away from Chattanooga for a 52-24 victory at Tarleton Memorial Stadium.
The Texans, now 5-0, exploded for 20 points in the second quarter to turn a close game into a commanding lead. The Mocs fell to 1-3 with the loss.
Chattanooga started strong, taking a 14-10 lead after a high-scoring first quarter. However, the Texans’ offense found its rhythm and the defense stifled the Mocs the rest of the way, outscoring them 42-10 over the final three periods.
Tarleton State quarterback Daniel Greek, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound sophomore from Argyle, Texas, led the offensive charge. He completed 11 of 18 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns while adding 4 yards on five carries. Backup quarterback Victor Gabalis, from Everett, Washington, also contributed, going 9 for 14 for 190 yards and a touchdown.
Wide receiver Peyton Kramer was Greek’s primary target, hauling in seven receptions for 190 yards and three touchdowns. The ground game was equally potent, with Tre Page III rushing for 110 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Caleb Lewis added 64 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 attempts.
The Texans’ defense also found the end zone, with linebacker Ty Rawls returning an interception for a touchdown.
For Chattanooga, the rushing attack provided the few bright spots. Journey Wyche rushed for 75 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, while Justus Durant added 88 yards and a score on 11 attempts. Ryan Ingram also rushed for a touchdown. Quarterback Camden Orth, from Gainesville, Florida, was 7 of 14 for 117 yards and led the team with 99 rushing yards on 11 carries.
The result was in line with projections from Interstat, which gave Tarleton State an 87.2 percent probability to win and projected a 39-23 final score. However, the combined 76 points easily surpassed the over/under line of 55.5. Chattanooga had been a 26.5-point underdog.
Tarleton State will look to continue its perfect season when it hosts Southern Utah on Oct. 4. Chattanooga returns home to face The Citadel on Sept. 27.
