Chattanooga at Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower and defensive opportunism, the undefeated Tarleton State Texans overpowered the Chattanooga Mocs 52-24 on Saturday night at a raucous Tarleton Memorial Stadium.

The Texans, now 5-0 for the season, weathered an early storm from the Mocs before unleashing a relentless attack that saw them score 42 unanswered points across the second and third quarters to turn a close contest into a decisive victory. Chattanooga fell to 1-3.

The game began at a breakneck pace, with both teams finding the end zone on their opening drives. Chattanooga struck first, capitalizing on a 39-yard pass from quarterback Camden Orth to Josh Williams to set up a 27-yard touchdown run by Justus Durant. The Mocs’ lead was short-lived, however, as Tarleton State answered with a methodical drive culminating in a 27-yard field goal from Brad Larson.

Chattanooga’s offense continued its hot start on the ensuing possession. Orth broke free for a 58-yard run, and two plays later, Ryan Ingram punched it in from 22 yards out to extend the Mocs’ lead to 14-3. The early momentum was firmly on the visitors’ sideline.

The Texans, demonstrating the poise of an unbeaten team, quickly quelled the threat. Quarterback Victor Gabalis, who shared snaps with Daniel Greek throughout the game, connected with receiver Peyton Kramer on a spectacular 68-yard touchdown pass, slicing the deficit to 14-10 and shifting the game’s momentum irrevocably.

The second quarter belonged entirely to Tarleton State. The Texans’ ground game, led by Tre Page III, took control. Page III broke the game open with a breathtaking 48-yard touchdown run early in the period, giving the Texans their first lead at 17-14. The defense then made a critical special teams play, as Omar Emmons blocked a Heath Jehu punt to set up a short field. Though the drive stalled, Corbin Poston nailed a 50-yard field goal to extend the lead.

After forcing a quick three-and-out, Tarleton State’s other quarterback, Daniel Greek, took over. He engineered a efficient drive, finding Kramer for a 39-yard touchdown strike to push the advantage to 24-14. Greek then led a two-minute drill to perfection, setting up Poston for a second field goal, this time from 49 yards as time expired in the half, sending the Texans into the locker room with a 30-14 lead.

Any hope of a Chattanooga comeback was extinguished in the third quarter. The Mocs managed only a 37-yard Jude Kelley field goal on their opening drive of the half. Tarleton State responded immediately, with Greek hitting Kramer for their third scoring connection of the night, a 38-yard pass that made it 37-17.

The knockout blow came from the Texans’ defense later in the quarter. With Chattanooga driving and looking to cut into the lead, linebacker Ty Rawls stepped in front of an Orth pass and returned the interception 57 yards for a touchdown, stretching the lead to 45-17 and effectively sealing the outcome.

Chattanooga added a late score on a 33-yard touchdown run by Journey Wyche in the fourth quarter, but Tarleton State had the final say. Caleb Lewis put an exclamation point on the victory with a 35-yard touchdown run with under three minutes to play, finalizing the 52-24 scoreline.

The Texans’ two-quarterback system was highly effective. Gabalis, from Everett, Washington, finished 9 of 14 for 190 yards and a touchdown, while Greek, from Argyle, Texas, was 11 of 18 for 214 yards and two scores. Their favorite target was Kramer, who hauled in seven receptions for 190 yards and three touchdowns. Page III led the ground attack with 110 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

For Chattanooga, Orth was a dual threat, rushing for 99 yards on 11 carries and passing for 117 yards, but the two interceptions proved costly. The Mocs’ rushing attack was potent, totaling 292 yards, led by Durant’s 88 yards and a score and Wyche’s 75 yards and a touchdown.

The victory keeps Tarleton State perfect on the year as they look ahead to a bye week before hosting Southern Utah on Oct. 4. Chattanooga will return home to face The Citadel next Saturday, seeking to get back on track in conference play.
