UNC Wilmington at Campbell

LILLINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — Jonah Oster homered and drove in two runs as Campbell defeated UNC Wilmington 3-1 on Thursday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium, extending the Fightin Camels’ recent dominance over their Colonial Athletic Association rivals.

Campbell improved to 40-15 overall while UNC Wilmington fell to 28-26. The Fightin Camels have now won five of the last six meetings between the two programs, including a three-game sweep in Wilmington three weeks ago and a four-game series victory earlier in the season.

The game remained scoreless through the first three innings as both starting pitchers matched zeroes. UNC Wilmington broke through in the top of the first when left fielder JP Pennella singled up the middle, moved to second on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a double play groundout by John Newton to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead. Campbell starter David Rossow settled in after that, striking out five and allowing only one run on six hits over seven innings.

Campbell tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Oster, playing third base at the time, launched his 12th home run of the season to left field, a solo shot that made the score 1-1.

The decisive inning came in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Mike Murphy walked and Lukas Schramm singled to right center, putting runners at the corners. Jett Music followed with a single down the right field line, bringing home Murphy to give Campbell a 2-1 lead. Music then stole second and Schramm stole third. After a fielder’s choice cut down Schramm at the plate, Oster delivered again, singling to left center to score Music from second and extend the lead to 3-1. Oster stole second but was left stranded.

UNC Wilmington threatened in the top of the eighth. Pinch hitter Brady Thompson singled and advanced to second on a fielding error by Schramm. After a strikeout, Pennella reached on a fielder’s choice, moving Thompson to third. Trevor Lucas then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Thompson and trimming the deficit to 3-2. Pennella advanced to third on a throwing error by right fielder Andrew Schuldt. Danny O’Brien walked to put runners at the corners, but Campbell brought in reliever Braxton Shaffer, who induced a groundout from Newton to end the inning.

The Seahawks could not mount a rally in the ninth. Shaffer worked a perfect inning, striking out Jake Bechtel looking to end the game.

Campbell’s bullpen recorded nine outs without allowing an earned run. Shaffer earned the save in relief of Rossow, who picked up the win. Oster, who finished with two hits, and Music each drove in a run. For UNC Wilmington, Pennella had two hits and scored the team’s only run, while Bechtel doubled and Thompson singled.

Trent Rumley and Elijah Clayton combined for four defensive assists for Campbell, and Clayton entered the game in the seventh at second base. UNC Wilmington’s Trey Williford started on the mound but did not factor in the decision.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Campbell 7, UNC Wilmington 3, and Interstat’s ELO system gave Campbell a 58.50 percent probability to win.
