UNC Wilmington at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (Interstat) — Campbell and UNC Wilmington will meet in a doubleheader Thursday, with the first game set for an afternoon start and the second game to follow in the evening at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Fightin’ Camels (39-15) enter as one of the hottest teams in the Coastal Athletic Association, having won five of their last six meetings against the Seahawks (28-25). Campbell swept a three-game series at UNC Wilmington last weekend, outscoring the Seahawks 34-19 across the three contests.

Zach Sabers, a pitcher to watch for Campbell, has been dominant in recent outings. In his last appearance Saturday at UNC Wilmington, Sabers threw four innings of one-hit ball, allowing one earned run and striking out four. Over his past four games, Sabers has a 1.86 ERA across 19 1/3 innings, with 17 strikeouts and no walks allowed in three of those appearances. He scattered two hits over 3 2/3 scoreless innings against Bradley on May 9.

The Seahawks counter with Mason Ruh, who threw a complete-game no-hitter Wednesday in a 5-0 win at Monmouth. Ruh struck out eight over nine innings, walking none. The performance was a stark turnaround from his previous outing against Campbell on May 14, when he lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and four runs in a 16-12 loss. Ruh has otherwise been effective, allowing zero earned runs in three of his last four relief appearances.

UNC Wilmington is coming off a bounce-back win after losing four straight, including the sweep at Campbell. On Wednesday, Casey Carpenter homered and drove in two runs, and Kevin Jones added an RBI single to support Ruh’s gem.

Campbell’s most recent win featured Jett Music, who homered and drove in three runs Saturday. Parker Webb recorded 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

The series has been lopsided recently: Campbell won five of the last six meetings, including a three-game sweep at UNC Wilmington from April 10-12. The Seahawks’ lone victory in that stretch was a 5-3 decision at Campbell on April 10.

Thursday’s doubleheader will be critical for both teams as the regular season winds down. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the second game to follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.
