Rutgers vs. Michigan

OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — Cade Montgomery pitched a one-hit shutout over seven innings and Michigan’s bats erupted for six runs in the seventh inning Tuesday as the Wolverines rolled to a 10-0 victory over Rutgers at Sapp Fieldhouse.

Montgomery, who scattered one hit with six strikeouts and no walks, faced the minimum 21 batters. He allowed only a fifth-inning single to Rutgers’ Jaros and retired the Scarlet Knights in order in four of his seven innings. The performance came after Montgomery had thrown 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief across two previous appearances against Minnesota.

Rutgers starter Vincent Borghese held Michigan scoreless through the first two innings despite the Wolverines putting runners on base. Borghese lasted 5 2/3 innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

Michigan struck first in the bottom of the first when Brayden Jefferis homered to right field, giving the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. The score stayed there until the third inning, when Colby Turner singled up the middle to drive in Mullens, who had doubled, making it 2-0.

The Wolverines added two more in the fourth. After walks to Ossenfort and a double by Dane Morrow, Drew Culbertson singled through the left side to score both runners, extending the lead to 4-0.

Michigan then broke the game open in the seventh off three Rutgers pitchers. Jefferis singled to lead off, and Evan Haeger followed with a two-run homer to left center. Noah Miller then hit a solo shot to left field, making it 7-0. After an error and a pitching change, the Wolverines loaded the bases on a walk to Culbertson and a hit-by-pitch to pinch-hitter Laffitte. Turner delivered the final blow, a two-run single through the left side, scoring Culbertson and Morrow to cap the scoring at 10-0.

Turner finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Morrow went 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Haeger and Miller each homered, and Jefferis added two hits. Culbertson drove in two runs.

Rutgers managed only one hit, a single by Jaros in the fifth. The Scarlet Knights struck out seven times and had just two baserunners all game.

The win improved Michigan to 33-22 overall and 33-22 in Big Ten play. Rutgers dropped to 26-29.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Michigan 5, Rutgers 4, and its ELO system gave the Wolverines a 54.90 percent probability to win.
