Alec Couture tosses gem as Monmouth beats Hofstra 5‑2

SOUTH HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Interstat) — Alec Couture threw seven innings of no-hit ball, striking out seven, and Aidan Bretschneider drove in four runs as Monmouth defeated Hofstra 5-2 in the first game of a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader Friday at University Field.

Couture allowed two earned runs despite not surrendering a hit, thanks to two walks and a hit batter. He bounced back after a rough outing against Northeastern on May 2. Austin Beard earned the save with two perfect innings and one strikeout.

Bretschneider delivered a two-run double in the fourth inning and added another two-run double in the eighth. Chris Walsh homered to left field in the fifth. Brendan Buecker had two hits for the Hawks.

Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the second on Michael Corona’s RBI double, then made it 2-0 in the third on a run-scoring single by Gallello. But the Pride managed only two runs on nine hits while using five pitchers. Brayden Gregg struck out five over 3 1/3 innings in relief.

Monmouth improved to 26-20 overall. Hofstra fell to 18-24.
