Texas Tech at Baylor
WACO, Texas (Interstat) — Tyce Armstrong drove in four runs and the Baylor Bears outlasted the Texas Tech Red Raiders 10-9 in the first game of a Big 12 doubleheader Saturday at Baylor Ballpark.
Armstrong went 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs, leading Baylor to its 25th win against 21 losses. The Bears improved to 25-21 overall, while Texas Tech fell to 22-24.
The game featured a staggering 28 hits — 15 for Texas Tech and 13 for Baylor — and a pair of late-inning explosions.
Baylor starter Zack Wallace earned the win, pitching six innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out three. The Bears used three relievers after Wallace left, with Grayson Murry recording the final out.
Texas Tech’s Connor Shouse was the star for the Red Raiders, going 4 for 5 with three home runs and five RBIs. His final homer came in the top of the ninth inning, pulling Texas Tech within a run.
The Red Raiders trailed 10-2 after Baylor scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, capped by Pearson Riebock’s two-run double and a run-scoring triple from Perez. But Texas Tech mounted a furious comeback.
In the top of the eighth, the Red Raiders scored four times. Thompson led off with a solo home run, his second of the season. After a single by Lopez, Shouse crushed a two-run homer, his ninth. Hughes doubled and Garcia doubled him home, making it 10-6.
Texas Tech kept pushing in the ninth. With one out, Shouse homered again — his 10th — to cut the deficit to 10-7. Hughes singled and Garcia singled, bringing the tying run to the plate. Ferraro singled to load the bases. Quintanar lifted a sacrifice fly to score Hughes, making it 10-8. Souza then singled through the right side, scoring Garcia and moving Ferraro to third.
With the tying run 90 feet away and go-ahead run at first, Baylor turned to Murry, who induced a flyout to center field from Goytia to end the game.
The pivotal moment came in the bottom of the seventh when Baylor broke open a 7-2 game. With two outs, Lanclos walked, Sanders singled and stole second. Riebock doubled to left, driving in both runners. After Janusek flied out, Armstrong popped out, but Perez tripled to right to score Riebock, extending the Bears’ lead to 10-2.
Baylor also got strong performances from shortstop Travis Sanders, who went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two stolen bases, and second baseman Riebock, who drove in two runs.
For Texas Tech, Linkin Garcia finished 2 for 5 with an RBI, and the Red Raiders’ bullpen saw several pitchers keep the game close early. Connor Mohan pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings with a strikeout. Jacob Rogers and Logan Addison each threw a third of an inning without allowing a hit.
The Red Raiders grounded into two double plays and left runners on base in critical spots. Texas Tech had the potential tying run thrown out at second base in the bottom of the eighth when Caraway, pinch running for Han, was caught stealing.
Both teams now turn to the second game of the doubleheader. Texas Tech will face Baylor again Sunday, then host Dallas Baptist on Tuesday. Baylor travels to Texas State on Tuesday before a home series against UCF.
The Interstat game simulator had projected a final score of Baylor 4, Texas Tech 2, with the Bears given a 51.20 percent probability to win by the Interstat ELO system.
