Texas Tech at Baylor

WACO, Texas (Interstat) — Texas Tech and Baylor open a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark, with both teams clinging to the fringes of postseason contention.

The Red Raiders (22-22) enter on a five-game losing streak after being swept at home by Oklahoma State, capped by an 11-2 loss Sunday. Baylor (23-21) broke its own four-game skid with a 6-2 win Tuesday against Texas-Arlington, earning a series split in Tempe earlier last week.

Outfielder Logan Hughes has been Texas Tech’s most consistent bat, hitting .364 (8 for 22) over his last six games with two home runs and eight RBIs. In the series against Oklahoma State, he went 7 for 12 with a homer and four RBIs, though the Red Raiders surrendered 36 runs in the three games. Hughes is batting .500 (7 for 14) with runners in scoring position over the past two weeks.

First baseman Tyce Armstrong leads Baylor at the plate. He went 3 for 4 with two home runs and two RBIs in the win over Texas-Arlington and homered twice in a 4-11 loss at Arizona State. Over his last four games, Armstrong is batting .556 (5 for 9) with four home runs and five RBIs. He has reached base safely in eight of his last nine appearances.

Texas Tech pitchers Bryce Suiter (2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 4 K) and Adam Hayes (4.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 K) were bright spots in the series finale, but the bullpen has surrendered 21 earned runs over the last 18 innings.

Baylor’s pitching staff posted a 3.12 ERA in the two games at Arizona State before the Tuesday win. Relievers Luke McLeod and Brayden Bergman each struck out two in scoreless innings against Texas-Arlington.

The doubleheader is the opening chapter of a critical set between two teams that sit below .500 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech has lost six of its last seven road games. Baylor has won three of its last four home games.

Saturday’s second game is scheduled to begin approximately 30 minutes after the first ends. Both teams continue the series Sunday before heading into midweek matchups: Dallas Baptist visits Texas Tech on Tuesday, while Baylor travels to Texas State.
