Wright State at Ohio State

COLUMBUS (Interstat) — Evan Boeckmann threw 3.1 hitless innings of relief and Wright State rode an eight-run outburst in the first two innings to an 8-4 victory over Ohio State on Tuesday at Bill Davis Stadium.

Boeckmann, who entered in the fourth inning with the Raiders already holding an 8-3 lead, struck out two and did not allow a baserunner. The performance was a bounce-back effort for the right-hander, who had allowed three earned runs without recording an out in his previous appearance April 29 against Miami (Ohio).

Wright State improved to 25-23. Ohio State dropped to 26-23.

The Raiders wasted little time jumping on the Buckeyes. Hunter Warren led off the game with a home run to left field. After Andrew Duncan was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a bunt single and throwing error, Carson Turner drove in Duncan with a bunt single of his own. Wright State led 2-0 after the top of the first.

The Raiders blew the game open in the second inning. Ben Manley doubled, Patrick Fultz singled and Warren singled to drive in a run. Duncan doubled to bring home two more, and a sacrifice fly by Jake Holmstrom plated Warren. The inning produced four runs on five hits, extending the lead to 6-0.

Ohio State answered in the bottom of the second. After loading the bases with a walk, hit by pitch and error, Grant Mangrum singled to score Mason Eckelman. CJ Reid followed with a fielder’s choice groundout that brought in Lee Ellis, cutting Wright State’s lead to 6-2. The Buckeyes added a run in the third on Dane Harvey’s solo home run to center field, making it 6-3.

Wright State padded its lead in the fifth. After a walk and single, a throwing error on a fielder’s choice allowed Sam Peltier to score an unearned run, pushing the advantage to 7-3. Duncan homered to left-center in the seventh for his second RBI of the night, making it 8-3.

Ohio State’s Henry Kaczmar hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to pull the Buckeyes within 8-4, but Wright State’s bullpen held firm. J.J. Thompson pitched two innings, allowing one earned run on no hits with three strikeouts. Cooper Robinson started for Wright State and went 3.2 innings, surrendering three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

Warren finished 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Duncan was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Fultz went 2 for 3 with a home run and an RBI. The Raiders collected 13 hits overall.

For Ohio State, Kaczmar was 1 for 4 with a home run and an RBI. Alex Bemis had two hits and an RBI. The Buckeyes managed seven hits and left five runners on base.

The most critical stretch of the game came in the first two innings, when Wright State scored all eight of its runs. The Raiders batted around in both the first and second frames, building an insurmountable lead against Ohio State starter Sahil Patel and reliever Luke Carrell. Patel was pulled after 1.1 innings, allowing six runs — five earned — on seven hits. Carrell pitched a scoreless inning but the damage was done.

Wright State had won three of its previous four games, including a 17-10 victory at Northern Kentucky on Sunday. Ohio State had lost four of its last five entering Tuesday, including a 3-2 10-inning win over Michigan State on Sunday that snapped a three-game skid.

The teams had met once earlier this season, with Wright State winning 10-8 in Dayton on March 24.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Ohio State 7, Wright State 6. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Wright State with a 51.60 percent probability to win.
