Maryland-Baltimore County at Towson

TOWSON, Md. (Interstat) — Keldrin Rodriguez hit two home runs, including a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, to lift Towson to a 9-8 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County on Tuesday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Baseball Complex.

Rodriguez finished 3 for 5 with seven RBIs, driving in all but two of Towson’s runs. His three-run homer in the first inning erased an early deficit, and his fourth long ball of the game — a towering blast to right-center with the bases loaded — capped a stunning comeback that gave the Tigers (20-30) a win in the opener of a home-and-home series.

The Retrievers (23-22) carried an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth behind a strong start from Aidan Boice. The right-hander went six innings, allowing no hits and two earned runs while striking out five. But the UMBC bullpen faltered in the final frame.

Towson’s rally began with a leadoff single by AJ Kolb. Yariel Rodriguez flied out to right field, and Coy Allman flied out to center, leaving Kolb on first with two outs. Brady Nathison walked, putting runners on first and second. Max D’Alessandro then singled through the left side to load the bases. Keldrin Rodriguez followed by launching a 1-0 pitch over the fence in right-center, scoring all four runners and touching off a celebration.

Rodriguez’s first home run came in the bottom of the first inning off UMBC starter Cole Koonce. After Ben Nugent singled and Nathison walked, Rodriguez drove a 3-2 pitch over the right-field wall, giving Towson a 3-1 lead. UMBC had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an unearned run. Dylan Melton singled, moved to second on a fielder’s choice and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Frank Adamski Jr.

The Retrievers answered in the fourth inning, scoring five runs — all unearned — after two Towson errors. Danny Orr singled, then reached second on a fielding error by third baseman Josh Janove. After a walk loaded the bases, Jesiah Carpenter reached on a fielder’s choice to drive in Orr. Joe Lomangino singled to bring home Brooks Henderson, and Nico Ong followed with a three-run homer to center field, staking UMBC to an 8-3 lead. Ong finished 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs.

Towson chipped away in the second inning when Coy Allman walked and scored on Nathison’s triple to center. Nathison was thrown out at home trying to stretch the triple. In the seventh, Nathison homered to left field off reliever Grant Teschendorf, cutting the deficit to 8-5. Nathison went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs.

The Tigers’ bullpen kept the game within reach. Aden Knowles pitched three innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs while striking out three. Vincent Salvo added two hitless innings, and Matthew Russell gave up three hits and one earned run over two innings. Jacob Whiteman allowed a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth to earn the victory.

For UMBC, Teschendorf pitched a third of an inning without allowing a hit. Ayden Gonzalez worked a third of an inning before Owen Shaprow came in and faced one batter — Keldrin Rodriguez — surrendering the grand slam. Shaprow was charged with an earned run in his only batter.

UMBC had opportunities to add runs but left the bases loaded in the fifth inning and grounded into a double play in the sixth. The Retrievers finished with 10 hits to Towson’s 11. The game lasted 3 hours, 18 minutes.

The teams met for the second time this season. Towson previously lost 6-5 in 11 innings at UMBC on April 21.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 5-4 win for Maryland-Baltimore County, and the Interstat ELO system gave the Retrievers a 58.70 percent probability to win.
