Maryland-Baltimore County at Towson

TOWSON, Md. (Interstat) — The Towson Tigers host the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday evening at John B. Schuerholz Baseball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures near 60 degrees.

UMBC (23-21) looks to rebound after dropping two of three games at Bryant over the weekend, including a 4-3 loss Sunday. The Retrievers, who are 1-0 against Towson this season, won a 6-5, 11-inning decision at home on April 21.

Towson (19-30) enters having lost four of its last five games, capped by a 14-6 defeat at William & Mary on Sunday.

Two pitchers — each having thrown effectively against the opposing team earlier this season — are players to watch.

For UMBC, right-hander Sergio Droz logged 2 1/3 scoreless, hitless innings with three strikeouts in relief against Towson on April 21. Droz’s most recent outing was a strong start Sunday at Bryant: 6 innings, 0 hits, 2 earned runs, 5 strikeouts in a losing effort. Over his past four appearances, Droz has allowed two earned runs across 15 1/3 innings (1.17 ERA) with 15 strikeouts.

For Towson, reliever Gavin Metrick faced UMBC on April 21, tossing one hitless, scoreless inning with one strikeout. Metrick also threw 1 1/3 scoreless, hitless innings with two strikeouts Sunday at William & Mary.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 victory for UMBC.

The Retrievers open a three-game home series against NJIT on Thursday. Towson hosts Northeastern in a three-game set beginning Thursday.
