Towson at Hofstra

SOUTH HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Interstat) — CJ Griggs went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs to lead Hofstra to a 12-1 win over Towson on Friday afternoon at University Field in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup.

The Pride pounded 16 hits and scored in six of eight innings, while the Tigers managed only five hits and one run. Hofstra improved to 16-22 overall and 8-6 in the CAA, while Towson dropped to 16-26 and 5-10.

Hofstra starter Carlos Martinez earned the win, allowing one earned run on five hits over 6 1/3 innings while striking out seven. He did not issue a walk until the seventh.

Towson starter Dutch DeProspero took the loss. He allowed five earned runs without yielding a hit over five innings, striking out four. The runs came on a sacrifice fly, two doubles, a single and another single, all in the first inning.

The game turned decisively in the sixth inning. With Hofstra leading 6-1 after Towson scored its lone run in the top half, the Pride erupted for four runs. Griggs tripled to right center to drive in Michael Brown, who had walked. After a walk to Anthony Corona, Gabriel Melara homered to right field, scoring Griggs and Corona to make it 10-1.

Hofstra added two more runs in the seventh on a two-run homer by Griggs, his second of the game. Melara also homered and finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Nick Gallello went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Brown had three hits and scored twice. Tyler Cox and Nick Biddle each had two hits and an RBI.

Towson’s only run came in the sixth. After a single by Kyle Kolb, a balk moved him to second, and Jordan Heckelman singled up the middle to bring him home. Heckelman was later picked off.

The Tigers did not advance a runner past first base in any other inning. They struck out 12 times, including seven by Martinez.

Matthew Russell relieved DeProspero and allowed two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. Tanner Sanderoff recorded two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning for Hofstra.

The victory avenged a 12-1 loss earlier in the season? Actually the two teams split a doubleheader earlier. Hofstra lost 8-6 at Towson on April 4, but won 9-6 on April 3.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Hofstra 4, Towson 2. Interstat’s ELO system gave Hofstra a 66.60 percent probability to win.
