Tarleton State at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — Caden Sorrell homered twice and drove in two runs as Texas A&M rallied past Tarleton State 9-7 on Tuesday night at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park, extending its winning streak to five games.

The Aggies improved to 34-8 overall, while the Texans dropped to 28-16.

Sorrell, who entered the game in a 1-for-14 slump over his previous four outings, broke out in a big way. He led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to left field, cutting Tarleton State’s early lead to 7-1. The Texans had scored seven runs in the top of the first without putting a ball in play, as the first seven batters reached base on walks, hit-by-pitches and errors before a single out was recorded. But Sorrell’s blast sparked a comeback that took the better part of eight innings to complete.

The Aggies chipped away with two unearned runs in the second inning, then pulled within 7-5 on Sorrell’s second homer of the night, a solo shot to right field in the fifth. Catcher Bear Harrison followed with a solo homer of his own in the same inning, cutting the deficit to 7-5.

Tarleton State’s offense continued to produce. Left fielder Rayner Heinrich went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, including a two-run double in the fourth that stretched the lead to 7-3. The Texans added a run in the sixth on Heinrich’s RBI double and another on a throwing error, making it 7-5.

But the Aggies answered in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on second and third and two outs, third baseman Nico Partida doubled to left-center, driving in two runs to tie the game at 7-7. Partida finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

The decisive moment came in the bottom of the eighth. With the game still tied, Tarleton State reliever Jack Lovin issued a leadoff hit-by-pitch to pinch hitter Sam Farr. A sacrifice bunt moved Farr to second, and a wild pitch sent him to third. After a pitching change, another wild pitch by Hunter Phetluangsy allowed Farr to score, giving Texas A&M an 8-7 lead. Gavin Grahovac walked, Sorrell singled, and Partida followed with an RBI single through the right side to plate Grahovac for a 9-7 advantage.

Clayton Freshcorn pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out one and allowing one hit to earn the save. Ethan Darden worked 2.1 innings of relief, giving up two hits and no earned runs to pick up the win.

For Tarleton State, first baseman Cage McCloud hit a solo home run in the fourth and finished 2-for-5. Third baseman Carson Lorch also homered and went 2-for-5. Relief pitcher Jackson Elizondo tossed two innings, allowing one unearned run while striking out three.

The Texans outhit the Aggies 13-11, but Texas A&M capitalized on three Tarleton State errors and executed two sacrifice hits.

The win was the Aggies’ fifth straight and improved their home record to 21-3. Tarleton State lost for the second time in its last three games after a four-game winning streak.

Texas A&M will host Auburn for a three-game series beginning Friday. Tarleton State travels to Utah Tech for a weekend series.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Texas A&M 7, Tarleton State 6, and Interstat’s ELO system gave the Aggies an 85.60 percent probability to win.
