Boston College at Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (Interstat) — Jack Radel pitched a complete-game seven-inning gem and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish erupted for 10 runs in the fifth inning to rout the Boston College Eagles 12-2 on Friday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium.

Radel struck out 11 and allowed nine hits and two earned runs while throwing 7.0 innings, bouncing back from a rough outing at Florida State a week earlier. The right-hander retired the side in order in the fourth and worked out of a jam in the fifth before his offense exploded.

The game was scoreless through four innings. Boston College took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI double by John that scored Gallo from first. The Eagles added another run in the sixth, but the contest was decided in the bottom of the fifth.

Notre Dame sent 13 batters to the plate in that frame, collecting eight hits — including two home runs — and taking advantage of a Boston College pitching change. Dylan Passo drove in the first run with a single through the right side, scoring Lee from second. Brzustewicz followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 2-2. Logan singled to left to give the Irish a 3-2 lead. After an intentional walk to Watters, Coy doubled down the right field line, clearing the bases for a 5-2 advantage. Quatrani then doubled down the left field line, scoring two more to make it 7-2. Lee singled, and Passo capped the rally with a three-run homer to right field, extending the lead to 10-2. The Irish added a solo home run by Watters in the sixth and an RBI single by Logan in the seventh to reach the final margin.

Boston College’s A.J. Colarusso took the loss, allowing six earned runs on zero hits? Wait, statline says 4.1ip 0h 6er 1k — that suggests he allowed runs without hits, likely walks and errors? Actually in the play-by-play, he was relieved after walking in runs? The box score shows 4.1 innings, zero hits, but six earned runs — unusual. The Eagles’ pitching staff struggled with command, issuing several walks and a hit batter.

The Eagles managed nine hits, led by Gallo and John each with a double and an RBI. Notre Dame pounded out 13 hits. Passo finished 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Quatrani was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Logan drove in two runs on two hits. Berkland, Lee and Brzustewicz each had two hits. Watters homered and drove in one.

Boston College dropped to 31-14 overall, while Notre Dame improved to 19-18. The teams meet again Saturday and Sunday for the remainder of the Atlantic Coast Conference series.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Boston College 8, Notre Dame 3. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Notre Dame with a 57.30 percent probability to win.
