Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Central Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. (Interstat) — Zachary Adams lined a walk-off double into the gap in right-center field in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday, lifting Central Arkansas to a wild 10-9 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Bear Stadium.

The Bears, who trailed by as many as seven runs early, completed a season sweep of their in-state foe in a nonconference matchup defined by momentum swings and late drama.

Central Arkansas improved to 23-19 overall, while Arkansas-Pine Bluff fell to 18-24.

The game’s most critical sequence unfolded in the final frame. After the Golden Lions scratched across an unearned run in the top of the ninth to take a 9-8 lead, Central Arkansas mounted its final rally against Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Zach Wieder, who had moved from third base to the mound.

Keon Moseni led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third after a walk to Ross Mark. Adams then delivered the game-winning hit, a double that scored Moseni easily and sent Mark home from first to trigger the celebration.

The comeback overshadowed a powerful offensive display from the Golden Lions’ middle of the order. Wieder finished 3 for 5 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Shortstop Aaron Grant went 3 for 4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs. Their back-to-back solo and two-run shots in the fifth inning highlighted a three-run rally that extended Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s lead to 9-6 at the time.

Central Arkansas chipped away relentlessly, fueled by Zeb Allen. The Bears’ center fielder, later shifting to left, went 2 for 3 with a home run, three RBIs and a sacrifice fly. His leadoff homer in the first inning immediately answered an unearned run by the Golden Lions, and his sacrifice fly in the eighth tied the game at 9.

The Bears’ bullpen proved pivotal in the late innings. After starter Silas Cowgill allowed four runs, only one earned, over three innings, relievers Kannon Nesslage and Hunter Alexander combined for two scoreless frames. Alexander earned the win after pitching the ninth.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Jordan Medellin provided three innings of strong relief, allowing no hits and one earned run while striking out one, but the Golden Lions’ defense committed four errors leading to five unearned runs.

Central Arkansas outhit Arkansas-Pine Bluff 12-11. Jagger Schattle added two hits and two RBIs for the Bears, while Adams’ two hits and two RBIs included the decisive blow.

The Bears’ victory defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 7-5 Central Arkansas win and whose ELO system gave the Bears a 79.4% probability of victory.

Central Arkansas travels to face Bellarmine for a three-game series starting Friday. Arkansas-Pine Bluff opens a Southwestern Athletic Conference series at Southern on Friday.
