Jacksonville at Florida Gulf Coast

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — Brendan Holland delivered a masterful seven-inning no-hit performance and the Jacksonville Dolphins capitalized on a pivotal eighth-inning rally to defeat the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 4-1 in ASUN Conference baseball action Saturday at Swanson Stadium.

The game was a tense pitcher’s duel for seven innings, dominated by the starters. Jacksonville’s Holland was utterly dominant, striking out seven and walking one while not allowing a hit. The only Eagles to reach base against him did so on a dropped third strike and a walk. Holland extended his scoreless innings streak to 13, following a six-inning, two-hit outing against Stetson on April 4.

He was matched for much of the day by Florida Gulf Coast’s Chris Diaz, who allowed just one unearned run on four hits over six innings, striking out eight.

Jacksonville scratched across its first run in the second inning. Sam Grunberg led off with a triple down the right field line and scored on Logan Baratta’s sacrifice fly to left.

The Dolphins added an unearned run in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Griffin Pomper reached on a fielding error by second baseman Cayden Hessemyer, advanced to third on a Blake Edmonds single, and scored on an RBI single through the left side by Sammy Mummau.

The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the eighth, breaking the game open against the Eagles’ bullpen. With reliever Sebastian Lippman on the mound, Mummau singled and Roger Vergara walked. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Derek Bermudez delivered the decisive blow, a two-run single through the left side to score both runners and give Jacksonville a 4-0 cushion.

Florida Gulf Coast broke up the combined no-hit bid and scored its lone run in the bottom of the eighth against Dolphins reliever Ayden Phillips. Drew Seidel, who had two of the Eagles’ four hits, walked and eventually scored from third on a balk. Phillips otherwise navigated two scoreless innings to secure the win.

The Eagles threatened in the sixth against Holland, putting runners at the corners with one out, but a fly out and a groundout ended the inning.

Jacksonville improved to 17-17 overall, while Florida Gulf Coast fell to 20-13. The Dolphins have taken the first two games of the series after a 6-4 victory on Friday.

The teams conclude the three-game series Sunday afternoon. Jacksonville is scheduled to visit UCF on Tuesday, while Florida Gulf Coast is set to travel to Florida Atlantic.
