Hofstra at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — Hofstra’s Pride scored four runs in the first inning Thursday afternoon and never looked back, blanking the Stony Brook Seawolves 4-0 at Joe Nathan Field to snap a two-game losing streak and split the season series with their Colonial Athletic Association rival.

The Pride jumped on Stony Brook starter Hunter Colagrande immediately. Brown led off the top of the first with a single to center field, stole second base and came home on Griggs’ two-run homer to right field. Melara followed with a single, Gallello added another single and Cox delivered an RBI single through the left side, scoring Melara. Hofstra loaded the bases with a hit batter, but Colagrande escaped further damage by striking out three straight batters to end the inning.

That four-run cushion proved more than enough for the Hofstra pitching staff, which held the Seawolves to six hits and never allowed a runner past second base after the first inning. Stony Brook’s best scoring chance came in the bottom of the third, when James Schaffer singled and Nick Zampieron singled to put runners on first and second with one out, but Nicholas Dromboski and Chanz Ty struck out swinging to end the threat. The Seawolves stranded two more in the bottom of the seventh after Matthew Jackson doubled and Mike Cervoni grounded out, and they left the bases loaded in the fourth when Chris Carson walked, stole second and moved no further.

Hofstra added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Griggs homered for the second time in the game, a solo shot to right field off Aidan Colagrande. That gave Griggs three RBIs on the day. The Pride collected 11 hits in all, with Brown, Griggs, Melara, Gallello and Cox each recording multiple hits. Cox also doubled and walked twice.

Stony Brook’s Hunter Colagrande took the loss after allowing three earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts over five innings. Ty Panariello threw two and two-thirds scoreless innings, yielding three hits and striking out two, while Aidan Colagrande allowed one run on one hit in one and one-third innings. Chanz Ty went 2 for 4 with a double for the Seawolves. Matthew Jackson doubled among his one hit, and Mike Villani and Nick Zampieron each had one hit.

The Pride improved to 19-25 overall and 8-9 in the Colonial, while the Seawolves fell to 20-29 and 8-12. The game was the first of a three-game series between the teams; they will meet again Friday and Saturday at the same venue. Hofstra had lost two straight, including an 18-10 defeat to Monmouth on May 10, while Stony Brook had lost four of its last five, including a 7-4 loss at Northeastern on May 10. The Seawolves had won the previous meeting between the sides, a 12-11 walkoff win in 10 innings on April 12 at Hofstra, but had lost the series opener on April 10 by an 11-5 margin.

The most important sequence came in the top of the first, when Hofstra batted around and plated all four of its runs before Stony Brook could record an out. That early outburst gave the Pride immediate control and forced the Seawolves to play from behind against a pitching staff that allowed only one extra-base hit after the first inning.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Stony Brook 5, Hofstra 4, and its ELO system gave the Seawolves a 58.10 percent probability to win.
