Hofstra at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Hofstra Pride and Stony Brook Seawolves renew their Colonial Athletic Association rivalry Thursday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field, with both teams seeking momentum after recent struggles.

First pitch is set for 4 p.m. under cloudy skies with a temperature of 66 degrees. The game is the first of a three-game series; the teams will meet again Friday and Saturday.

Hofstra (18-25) enters on a three-game losing streak, most recently falling 18-10 to Monmouth on Sunday. The Pride’s offense has been inconsistent: They scored 12 runs in a win over Towson on May 1, but managed only two runs in their previous loss to Monmouth.

Center fielder Tyler Cox is a key catalyst. In his last 10 games, Cox has three multi-hit performances, including a 3-for-5 effort with a home run and two RBIs against Monmouth on May 10. However, he has also gone hitless in four of those contests, illustrating the lineup’s volatility. Cox is batting .310 for the season with six home runs.

Stony Brook (20-28) is coming off a 7-4 loss at Northeastern on Sunday, dropping two of three in that series. The Seawolves have lost four of their last six games.

Right-handed pitcher Nicholas Rizzo has been a bright spot. Over his last five appearances — mostly in relief — Rizzo has a 2.35 ERA with 15 strikeouts and only one earned run allowed in his past two outings. He threw 3.1 scoreless innings against Northeastern on May 10, and struck out seven over 3.2 hitless innings at Saint John’s on May 5.

The teams split a three-game series earlier this season at Hofstra. Stony Brook won 12-11 in 10 innings on April 12 and 5-0 on April 11, while Hofstra took the opener 11-5 on April 10.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 5-4 victory for the Seawolves.

Hofstra’s offense will need to produce against a Stony Brook pitching staff that has allowed 12 runs or more in three of its last five defeats. The Pride’s bullpen has also struggled, posting a 6.20 ERA over the past two weeks.

For Stony Brook, getting consistent offense has been a challenge. The Seawolves scored 15 runs in a win at Towson on April 24, but have been held to four or fewer runs in four of their last six games.

Thursday’s game begins a critical stretch for both teams as they jockey for position in the CAA standings. Hofstra sits near the bottom with a 14-17 conference mark, while Stony Brook is 16-17 in league play.

Following Thursday, the series shifts back to Joe Nathan Field for contests Friday and Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. each day.
