Maryland at Rutgers
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Interstat) — Bud Coombs homered and drove in four runs, and Maryland’s bullpen tossed seven scoreless innings as the Terrapins defeated Rutgers 11-7 on Sunday afternoon at Bainton Field to avoid a three-game sweep in the Big Ten series.
Coombs, the Terrapins’ center fielder, went 1 for 2 with a solo home run in the seventh inning and added two sacrifice flies, finishing with four RBIs. His seventh-inning blast off Rutgers reliever Owen Jordan put Maryland ahead 9-7 after the Scarlet Knights had pulled within one run in the fifth.
Maryland trailed 5-1 after two innings but erupted for four runs in the top of the third to tie the game. The rally began with a walk to Ben Costello and a fielder’s choice that put runners on second and third. After a pitching change, Coombs lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Martin. Two pitches later, Paul Jones II crushed a three-run homer to left field, his seventh of the season, to knot the score at 5.
Jones finished 2 for 5 with two home runs and four RBIs, including a solo shot in the fifth inning that gave Maryland the lead for good. The Terrapins added three more runs in the eighth on Jordan Crosland’s solo homer and another sacrifice fly from Coombs, then tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Russell.
Rutgers opened the game with a three-run first inning courtesy of Ryan Jaros’ three-run homer, his ninth of the season. The Scarlet Knights added two more runs in the second on Charlie Meglio’s solo homer and a sacrifice bunt by Quinn Sweeney that scored Brandon Wiltsey, building a 5-1 lead.
But Maryland’s pitching staff shut Rutgers down after the second. Reliever Andrew Koshy struck out two over three hitless innings, Lance Williams tossed three perfect innings, and Jake Yeager worked a scoreless inning. The trio combined to retire the last 16 Rutgers batters in order.
Rutgers got a home run from catcher Trey Wells in the fifth inning, his fifth, and Jaros added an RBI single to cut Maryland’s lead to 6-5, but the Scarlet Knights could not sustain the momentum. Wells finished 2 for 4 with a homer and an RBI, and Jaros went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
Maryland finished with 11 hits, while Rutgers had 10. The Terrapins made three sacrifice flies in the game, all by Coombs or Russell.
The win improved Maryland’s record to 23-27 overall, while Rutgers dropped to 24-27. The Terrapins had lost the first two games of the series, 10-0 on Saturday and 5-3 on Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Maryland 4, Rutgers 3, and the ELO system gave Rutgers a 53.60 percent probability to win.
