Maryland at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Interstat) – The Maryland Terrapins and Rutgers Scarlet Knights conclude a three-game Big Ten series Sunday afternoon at Bainton Field, with rain in the forecast and both teams looking to build momentum before the final week of the regular season.

Maryland (22-27) and Rutgers (24-26) are separated by two games in the loss column. The Scarlet Knights have already clinched the series, winning the opener 5-3 on Friday and run-ruling the Terrapins 10-0 on Saturday.

The pitching matchup features two players who dueled in Friday’s game. Maryland right-hander Cristofer Cespedes is expected to start. Cespedes delivered a dominant outing Friday, allowing one unearned run on no hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts, but received no run support in the loss. In six relief appearances since April 18, he has compiled 21 2/3 innings, allowed two earned runs and struck out 26, showing high-leverage ability despite a mix of starting and relief roles.

Rutgers will counter with right-hander Zack Konstantinovsky, who earned the win Friday. He went 6 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and two earned runs while striking out nine. Konstantinovsky has been inconsistent, allowing three earned runs or more in three of his last four starts, but his nine-strikeout performance against Maryland marks a season high.

Weather could be a factor. The forecast calls for 62 degrees Fahrenheit and rain at first pitch.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 4-3 victory for Maryland, reflecting the expected tight pitching duel. The Terrapins have lost six of their last seven games and nine of their last 11, with the only win in that stretch coming at Towson on May 5. They have struggled offensively against Rutgers, scoring three runs total in the series.

Rutgers has won four of its last five, including the two wins over Maryland and a series victory at Southern California last weekend.

Following Sunday’s game, Maryland returns home to host Penn State for a three-game series starting Thursday. Rutgers travels to Northwestern for a three-game set beginning Thursday.
