FORT MYERS (Interstat) — Hunter Possehl pitched seven strong innings and Evan Dempsey drove in three runs as Florida Gulf Coast swept West Georgia with a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.
Dempsey finished 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, including a solo shot in the third inning that cut West Georgia’s lead to 2-1. Possehl allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out four, improving to a team-best mark in ASUN play. His previous outing was a dominant start at Stetson on May 3, when he threw 5.1 scoreless innings with one earned run and six strikeouts.
West Georgia struck first in the top of the second. Anthony Cole grounded out to shortstop, scoring Cooper from third after a wild pitch had advanced him. The Wolves added another run in the fourth on Cole’s single through the left side, scoring McCullough to make it 2-0.

Florida Gulf Coast tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. After a walk, a single and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt loaded the bases, Dempsey lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. Embury followed with an RBI single to right, scoring Gagnon for a 3-2 lead. The Eagles added two more in the eighth. Cayden Hessmyer doubled, and after a fielder’s choice, Gagnon singled and Cole Lasher drove in Seidel with a single to right. Dempsey capped the inning with an RBI single.

The teams will head in opposite directions next week, with Florida Gulf Coast traveling to Jacksonville for a three-game series beginning Thursday, while West Georgia visits North Florida.
